Re: we decided to bank the baby's cord blood.
How much does it cost?
I think I heard somewhere that its supposedly more affordable if you put the cord blood into a general bank that anyone can use and that you would have access to as well if you need it. Am I making that up?

Re: we decided to bank the baby's cord blood.
well it was 2050 but i got 200 off b/c my sister just did it so its a friends and family discount. If anyone wants to use me as a reference you can get money off and i get $50.00 .
So i piad 1850 which includes first year storage fee and then its 125 a year from then on. I am not sure the difference between cbr and viacord.

If you mean donating it to a public bank than it is free of charge but you wouldn't have access to your child's cord blood.

my DH works for a stem cell research company (so he gets a discount) and we have decided when we have children that we will do the same thing.

Re: we decided to bank the baby's cord blood.
Thats great but there this turned me off to it. We have no history of the treatable, as of now, diseases in our families. For us it's not worth the cost.
"As with any transplant therapy, therapeutic success depends upon many factors beyond the stem cells themselves including patient condition, type of disease, recipient-donor relationship and matching, and other factors. Although the potential use of umbilical cord blood is expanding rapidly, the odds that a family member without a defined risk will need to use their child’s umbilical cord blood are low. There is no guarantee that the umbilical cord blood will be a match for a family member or will provide a cure. Autologous cord blood stem cells will not guarantee suitable treatment for all inherited genetic diseases."

i hear ya but our thng was they are doing so many advancements that this could all change in the near furture. Also nothing in the medical feild is 100% gaurenteed so i figured its just like an extra insuarnce policy i may never and hope to never have to use it.

Re: we decided to bank the baby's cord blood.
We decided to do it also and are using CBR. I paid the whole thing up front including storage for 18 years and wound up paying $3,300. I had a $250 gift card and then talked the guy down another $100 or so.
We also have embryoy's frozen from the IVF but decided even though we have this we still opted to do the blood banking even though we both have no history of any of those illnesses. We figure it's an insurance policy we hope we will never have to use.

Besides the discount that you got for friends/family...were you able to negotiate the price with them? I heard you can do this and you can pay less.... I asked for more information online and awaiting for it.

I was told by the lamaze instructor/RN that what the cord banking companies don't tell you is that more than likely you won't be able to use the banked blood on your other children should they need it. I don't know if it's true but she seemed to be knowledgeable.

I can't quote the specifics, but I know that CBR definitely has a twins discount. I think that the annual fee is the same, though = $125/baby.

I completely agree with your reasoning. I think we are doing it too. I just have to decide which company we're going with.

Re: we decided to bank the baby's cord blood.
We are also going to do it. At first we were on the fence. But, my brother's best friend has a sister who had lukemia at 3 years old. They didn't have any family history of it, either. And, I'm sure that when they had her they didn't think they would ever need it also.
I just thought that you never know what can happen. And, for $125 a year, it's worth it. I jus think of all the times I waste $125 on nothing.

Re: we decided to bank the baby's cord blood.
I spoke with someone from CBR and the cost was $1950.00 for the initial process and then $125.00 a year. They have payment plans as well. They have a 48 month plan for something like 50.00 a month.
