If you have asthma...

can you have an attack from the smell of smoke?
Some woman just cancelled her reservation for the week because the people that were in the room before her were smokers. She said "the room didn't smell of it, but she saw the CLEAN ashtray there and knew." She said her son was highly allergic and she couldn't possibly stay! Is that possible?

i've never had an actual attack from it but after a week of it, it might gradually make me a little uncomfortable.

I never had an actual attack either but it certainly is not good for an asthmatic like myself. I would know too - I can smell smoke in a room even if it has been aired out, cleaned, etc.

She admitted that she couldn't smell anything in the room, it was just that she saw the ashtray and knew that at sometime someone had smoked in there. I felt terrible, but wasn't sure if it was that or the weather that was making her leave. Chat Icon

I never had an attack from being a room that someone once smoked in but I puffed on a cigarette as a joke once in college and went right into an attack. And my asthma hadn't been bad in many many years.

I hate when I go into a hotel room that is suppose to be non-smoking and you can tell a smoker was there. I have a hard time staying in that kind of a room - often it will affect my allergies but never put me to an asthma attack.

Re: If you have asthma...

DH has asthma and if he even smells smoke he has trouble breathing...I think that it depends on how severe the asthma is.

Re: If you have asthma...

they say it's not technicaly an allergy when it's smoke related. I'm not sure why. Smoke kills me. I can get very sick if there are smokers near me, even if they're not smoking, the odor on thier clothes makes me sick. I sometimes have to avoid my own driveway or windows because I had smokers on both sides of me Chat Icon

Re: If you have asthma...

I am convinced that my asthma is at least 50% psychological, and if the SIGHT of the ashtray sent her into an ashtmatic fit, then I'd bet she is like me. And actual smoke DOES send me into an attack. Infact, I HAVE asthma from my parents smoking around me as a kid.

Re: If you have asthma...

My mother is a severe asthmatic, and yes, she'll get an attack from the smell of smoke, even if the smoker is no longer in the room (my mother needs a nebulizer treatment at least once a day anyway).

I'm a mild asthmatic, and if I'm in a space that has smokers, it gets slightly aggravated after several hours.
