Christening Question

Anyone pick or know of someone who picked a godparent that was Jewish? I wanted to pick my sister, who is Catholic, and her husband....who is Jewish...is that possible?

Re: Christening Question

Our Church said the one Godparent had to be Catholic and the other had to be at least a Christian.

Check with your church, I think that's fine in my Church, only one of the godparents had to be Catholic.

No offense to anyone. I know that religion is a touchy subject, but they won't ask for proof to see if the person is catholic or not. Chat Icon

I do not believe that is 100% true. I don't know about godparents, but our best man and MOH had to be Catholic and we had to get paperwork proving they received their sacrements.

I'm Catholic and all 3 of my children were baptized, and the godparents, although they are all Catholic, all they did was ASK me if they were Catholic, that's it! there was no paperwork or anything. Same went for my wedding as well. I think it truly depends on the church. Some may pursue it and some may just take your word for it.

The church where my son will be baptized, which is pretty liberal, said both had to be Christian. My son's Godmother is Catholic and the Godfather is Greek Orthodox and they were okay with that. They didn't ask me for any proof. The priest said "he trusted me." Honestly I would feel really bad lying to a priest and what if it comes out on the day of.Chat Icon I would just call your church and ask.

My niece's godfather is Jewish and we're Catholic. My sister's current parish wouldn't allow it, so she went back to her old one where it didn't matter, strangely, because I was her son's godmother there and had to get a letter stating I was a practicing Catholic.

Re: Christening Question

My church said only one had to be in order to sign a baptismal certificate. they said to pick people who are good examples and did not necessarily have to be christian - in so many words. They never asked if they were or for proof.

I was a godparent for my neice and I had to bring documentation that I was registered in a parish to be a god parent - so I guess it depends on the church.
