naive question
but what is a mucus plug and how do you know you lost it? I am 30 weeks but I still don't know this.

It is like a cork that goes over your cervix (on the inside).
When your cervix begins to dilate or soften - it sometimes comes out.
Not everyone loses it that they notice.
When you lose it you will go into labor fairly soon - hours to days.
For me I lost mine in the middle of my 39th week, but I never went into labor. So everyone is different.
