Brian Roberts - Classless Yankee Play
Am I the only one here that thinks that Brian Roberts play was totally classless?
I am not even talking about Bubba running into Brian causing the injury that will probably put Roberts out for the season. Accidents happen.
But the ****ing Yankee coaches actually had the gall to wave Bernie home while Roberts is sitting there in pain. Bernie didn't even start running initially cause I betcha even he felt it was wrong.
I could see if the ball got away and went into the outfield... or towards the dugout. But Brian caught the ball... then just dropped it and the ball laid right next to him. He was in so much pain he couldn't even move.
I am sorry... but thats a classless play. I really hope the Yanks totally blow open the game... so Baltimore can drill Bernie the next time he is up for this one.
There are unwritten rules in baseball... and I bet you this is one of them.

Re: Brian Roberts - Classless Yankee Play
And I am sure all the Yankee marks will come out saying "oh thats baseball... any team would do it".
Thats a load of horseshyt. The Yankee teams of OLD I betcha would not have done that.
But you see the NEW yanks are so desperate for wins these days they will stoop even this low. There were NO outs. That runner at third would have scored at some point.
Like I said... I really hope Bernie gets drilled in the head for this one. Totally gutless play that deserves some retribution.
Don't be surprised if somebody on the Yanks gets plunked this game.

I agree 100%. It's almost like the unwritten rule of not stealing a base when your team is ahead by 10 runs.

LOL come on Brian. I knew somebody would say "well some other team would do the same".
No they wouldn't. No other team would IMO. If the ball passes Roberts and goes to the outfield or dugout... fine.
But that was a classless play by a team desperate for wins. There were NO outs, and the run would have scored at some point.
The stupid Yankee coaches were waving Bernie home... and even Bernie refused to go at first if you watch the replay.
He hesitated because as a player he knows thats just wrong to take advantage of a situation like that.

Re: Brian Roberts - Classless Yankee Play
off your point a little....bubba has class!! he visited brian in the hospital the next day.
I also want to ask, if a player in the outfield is running to catch a fly and hits the wall and hurts himself, are teams then also expected not to run? This was not the first time someone has ever been hurt in the middle of the play...other teams HAVE kept running before...but yes, please, continue to act like its just the yankees

Re: Brian Roberts - Classless Yankee Play
As much as I can't stand the "can't do no wrong Yankees" I have to disagree. Remember the Beltran/Cameron clash...did the game stop? it did but not before the runner on the opposing team ran to third base.

Re: Brian Roberts - Classless Yankee Play
There is a difference between a play that happens in the outfield (where people would score by tagging up anyways)... or like I said... if the ball was thrown into the dugout or the outfield.
But with the Roberts play... he simply dropped the ball and the ball sat in the infield. Thats a different scenario.

Re: Brian Roberts - Classless Yankee Play
Rich,
Your thread sparked me to have this conversation with my BIL who is a die hard mets fan. MY BIL wants to make a few points:
" I don't think what Bernie did was wrong. All he saw was a collision, there was no way to tell how serious the injury was at the time. And the Yankees are in a pennant race with two teams right now and seven games to go. You play until the Umpires tell you not to play. Now, if the guy's arm had been chopped off and blood was spewing everywhere, that might be a different story. But just a collision where no ump ruled the ball dead, you take as many bases as they give you. As much as I think that certain members of the Yankees management probably do not have any such classlessness, but guys like Jeter and Bernie Williams are not cut from that cloth."
Last but not least...this made me laugh a lot:
"I hate the Yankees as much as the next Mets fan, but I wouldn't choose this play to hang my hat on. Tell him to stick with the A-Rod girlie *****-slap from last year if he wants to make fun of the Yankees moral fiber....or maybe the Roger Clemens play where he threw Piazza's bat back at him"
Just thought it was funny enough to post

Re: Brian Roberts - Classless Yankee Play
AGHHHHHAAAA. So the yanks are not the only team to take advantage of an injury:
"The Reds lost center fielder Wily Mo Pena in a scary incident in the fourth. With two outs, Bill Hall hit a drive to left-center, and Pena smashed into the wall attempting a diving play.
Hall was thrown out at home trying to stretch his triple into an inside-the-park home run, and athletic trainers immediately sprinted out to Pena, who was diagnosed with a hyperextended lower back"
