DH brought up an idea last week
what do you think?
My parents live in AZ in a condo that we own. They pay us rent which covers about 70% of the expenses.
Eventually I would like to sell it and bring them back here to live. My dad will probably work partime and they have very limited funds and mom is disabled (but fine) so we will be subsidizing them no matter what.
We could rent them an apt here for something like $1100/mo I guess or sell our house and get a 2 family or mother daughter somewhere.
I would probably have to move more east though to get a big enough house.
It all sounds rather daunting though. Selling two properties, moving into one..etc..
One of the upsides is, I have them here and as they older they could need us more and also if/when we have a baby, they could be built in babysitters (which they would love!!!) I would still have to consider day care at least part time as I couldn't see them having a kid around all day.
I guess I could do some preliminary research on how much 2 family or mother daughter homes are and where I could get one that would suit our needs.
I would have proceeds from the sale of 2 properties and that would help, but I thought it was a great idea, but I'm hoping I'm not being swayed by the thought of having my folks with me and built in babysitters!
I do miss them and my mother can't wait to move back here.
BTW-DH is not sure he loves this idea, but he came up with it.

I live in a two family home - my grandparents lived downstairs, us upstairs.
it worked out great, since we had built in babysitters -
you can easily find large high ranches that you can convert the downstairs into an apartment.
my house was orignally a ranch, and the upstairs completely resembles the first floor.
I think thats a great idea. While it is daunting, it sounds like it would be worth it.

I would def start by researching mother-daughter houses (locations, cost, taxes, etc) and take into consideration how much that would add to both of your commutes.
If I were in your situation, I would also want my folks near by. that must be so hard knowing that they're not happy there and that you all miss each other terribly

It is, especially now that I'm experiencing health problems. They want to be here so badly.
I guess I could rent them a place first to bring them back and then find another house evenually. It's not optimal with two moves, but the second move wouldn't be so drastic. It may be less stress on me.
I think I will start looking into the house first and see what the story is.
I would ultimatley not want to do a build out of any kind, but cosmetic stuff would be fine.

do you have room in your house so that they can stay with you for a while? this way, you would save at least $1500 a month - which can go towards a new and bigger house.
If you have the room, I would have them stay with you for a while so you can save that $

The mortgage and utils are more than that right now so it wouldn't be any more money than we are spending currently. It would be great to not have that at all, but I don't think DH would agree to a long term arrangement like that. I think there would be a divorce! It could be months before a house is found and a closing. I don't know if I could live with my parents like that.

yea, it would def be hard. but would save you a lot of money if you were able to put up with it.

Well, I guess I could leave them down there for now and start my research. Who knows, I could find something right away.
I think selling my house will be tougher.
My cousin is a realtor and she is finding it hard to sell homes. It is taking a while now.

I think that would be a good idea. sell your house first and get into a new one. once that's done, move them here and sell the condo in AZ.
