Rice Cereal in milk... how?
So, I attempted to put rice cereal in a bottle, and when DS latched on, he looked like he was eating like a champ. After about 10 mins, and I noticed he still had milk in the bottle, I removed it, and realized that he hadn't even drank an ounce... the flakes had the nipple blocked!
So my question is, how do you feed a child cereal when the nipple is so closed and gets clogged? I tried opening up the nipple a lil, but I apparently opened it too much because the flow was too fast for DS. Any suggestions?
TIA!

I'm not sure what kind of bottles your using, but Dr. Browns makes a cross cut nipple - I'm sure the other makers do too. I've never used them, so I'm not sure about the flow.
ETA: Have you tried giving the cereal to him on a spoon?

Oh, I use the Avent bottles, but the cut isn't criss cross, it's actually just dots - either 1, 2 or 3 depending on the nipple.

Re: Rice Cereal in milk... how?
I am not going to use a bottle. I was told it can cause too many problems so I went out yesterday and bought infant spoons and will try it that way tonight. I am so excited
Have you tried a spoon? A bottle with rice cereal can be a choking hazard.

OMG!! I was just about to post this. I put rice cereal for the first time yesterday and I also noticed he didn't drink an ounce. Then I made the nipple a little bigger and the flow was too fast. I just got back from Target because I had to buy more nipples. I screwed up on a couple already.

Posted by Marcie DH said to me that I should start Ali on it - but I don't even know where to start I've heard wonders about how they'll sleep longer cause of it... and I gotta tell ya, I think it worked. Last night, tho I struggled with the nipple, I fed DS, and he slept from 12:45-5:15am... and he's normally up every 3hrs.

I was trying to figure this out myself. My ped is a jerk so I refuse to call her for her help.
I read to start at 1 feeding a day give a bottle then mix 1-2 tablespoons of rice cereal with formula/BM. Keep it very watery at first. 1st rice feedings should be done 30 mins or so before bedtime.

My ped said to only give it to my DS on a spoon. You just mix with breastmilk or formula and feed it to them on a spoon. My DS loved it from the first day.

I just messed up one, but I feel guilty that I have one less nipple now... that doesn't sound right...lol.

Re: Rice Cereal in milk... how?
I tried with a spoon but he doesn't understand to open up his mouth and swallow. He is 2 1/2 months old. Maybe I just have to keep introuducing it to him and maybe then he'll get it.

He have to keep trying. This is a reflex that they have to learn.

Re: Rice Cereal in milk... how?
As for sleeping longer that is a myth. Antoniois 11months and has had cereal in his bottle (reflux issue) since about 6months and he still gets up.
Iwas told by my gastro doc to put the cereal in it to make it heavier so he does not spit-up and reflux. I use the Dr. Brown's Y-cut. If I forget that specific bottle I just take a fork and make the regular hole bigger, but it's a guessing game. You are better off using the Dr. Brown's Y cut. Iadd a tspn per ounce in all his bottles. HTH

Re: Rice Cereal in milk... how?
First of all the Ped. will always incourage you to sppon feed cereal instead of in the formula as they so call say it will cause your baby to (1) be obese (2) lazy (since they'll get used to a bottle.
In the latin culture - You do what you feel is right and forget what the Ped. recommends especially when it comes to feeding.
Lichi, I used the same Avent bottles with my son and it was a nightmare at the beginning. Burn the tip of a safety pin and slightly & gently poke one of the holes from the nipple to make it just a little bit bigger. If you can get at least 1 hole out of the 2 or 3 to release a bigger flow you'll be fine.
Also, try not putting to much cereal as it'll be more like oatmeal (thick) you want it to be watery.
Good Luck!

I would ask your ped first. My ped made sure my DS had good neck control before she told me to feed him with the spoon. He is four months and we just started, and he has good control for his age.

you are doing this now? you were my due date twin and i haven't even thought about this yet...
when do people usually start this?
DS is 2 months old and I know he needs rice cereal. He has anywhere from 6 to 10 ounces a feeding. he needs something more. I am going by instinct.

Re: Rice Cereal in milk... how?
I had to start putting it into DD's bottles 2 weeks ago to reduce reflux. My ped said to add 1 teaspon to every 2 ounces of milk. It isn't really to give the rice -- it was just to thicken up the milk. I went up to the level 2 Dr. Brown's nipples. I was afraid that the Y-cut would be too fast for her. She does fine with the level 2.
Regarding having trouble with the spoon, that is because they have a reflex that forces them to push the food out with their tongue. Eating from utensils takes practice for them, and they have to be past the age of still having this reflex intact (this is what I've been told by BTDT moms).
As far as sleeping better with it, DD did sleep better the first night, but now she is back to normal.
