Floor refinishing-did you leave the house?

We are finally getting our floors redone - one of the last steps in our remodeling job Chat Icon - and Im wondering about being out of the house. The guy will be doing it over 2 days and it will be the main floor, stairs & upstairs hallway. Do I need to leave the house for a few days and sleep elsewhere? I have 3 small kids (under 4 yrs including a 3 month old). I was originally planning on doing this but we had the reschedule when the baby was sick and where I was planning on going is not necessarily going to work for the days we have scheduled for the floor to be done.

We were not living in it at the time.

Yes, the fumes were VERY toxic. I don't know how these floor guys do what they do.

Even after 24 hours you could still smell some of it. I'd leave and try to stay with relatives for at least a few days or schedule it when you are on vacation.

When my mom hd it done years ago, we were told to leave for two days, so we stayed in a nearby hotel.

All of our floors were done in 2 days. We slept elsewhere the first night. I wanted to make sure it was dry and I was afraid any smells might have bothered me.

Yes - we also did when I was preggo. We used it as an excuse to stay at hotel for the weekend. Chat Icon

We stayed with a friend for 2 nights. On top of refinishing the floors, we had just painted with an oil-based primer so the fumes were insane.

Plus we couldn't put furniture on the floors for 24hrs (I was nervous and stretched it to 48).

Actually our oil based paint smelled MUCH worse than the smell of the stain on the floor. My mother swears she can still smell the paint fumes and it's been about 3 months since we painted..... If it does still smell, I am just used to it. The floors really werent that bad to me.

I totally agree. I smelled the primer before the poly. That stuff is noxious.

We weren't living their at the time but the same guy did a co-workers floor and it is just him and the his dog and the told him he needed to leave for 3 days because the floor needs to cure and the fumes are extermly toxic.

We just did it last week. We didn't stay at the house - we scheuduled it when my in laws were away and we stayed at their house.

I wouldn't recommend going on vacation though - you should really be there to let the guys into the house. It takes a few days for them to complete all the steps.
