Spinoff (kind of) re: race playing an issue in the New Orleans recovery/aid efforts
I was thinking about something...when the Tsunami hit, the US was one of the first, if not the first, to go over and give TONS of aid and TONS of money and go down there to help in any way -possible. Most of the people who lived there are black (yes there were some tourists too but the residents are black). Yet...we went and helped. If the US didnt want to help the people of NO because they're black...then why were we so quick to jump to help Tsunami victims? I was thinking about this and was wondering what your thoughts all were?

If I remember correctly the US took several days in allocating funds. I also believe that we first gave an embarrassingly low amount of money in comparision with other much smaller countries.
It is no secret that the US helps poorer countries and continues to ignore its own poor. That is part of my issue with our government as a whole. We are always interested in looking like the hero to other countries, which often results in our own issues being pushed down the priority ladder.
