Huge accident on the LIE!
LIE westbound closed at exit 39. I don't know if anyone has to travel that way, but I figured I would post it. All westbound lanes have been closed for three hours and are still closed.

Re: Huge accident on the LIE!
From Newsday:
A tractor-trailer rig was heading west in the center lane of the Long Island Expressway this morning when the driver told police the rig experienced a mechanical problem and veered to the left, striking an Audi. After being struck, the driver of an Audi slammed into the retaining wall separating the westbound and eastbound lanes, Nassau police said.
Two Classic Coach charter buses -- one filled with school children, the other with parents and faculty -- then struck the tractor-trailer, which crashed ahead of the buses. The buses were heading into the city for a show at New York University, police said.
None of the children were injured, and they were taken back to the school. Six parents had minor injuries. Most treated at the scene. The truck driver also had minor injuries, police said.
The driver of the Audi had to be cut out of the car and taken to the Nassau University Medical Center in East Meadow by helicopter, people said. He is expected to survive his injuries.
The crash occurred about 8:45 a.m. at Exit 39 Traffic in the eastbound lanes was mostly caused by rubbernecking motorists.
Tractor trailer driver Jose Garcia, who works for the New Brother Transport Corp in Union City, N.J., was hauling waste when he said his steering wheel locked as he tried to avoid a car on the center lane, veering left.
"I feel bad I couldn't control it," Garcia, 49, said. "I feel bad ... Thank God the man is alive."
Det. Alexander Barnych of Nassau's Third Squad said, "The guy in the Audi is a lucky man. He's very fortunate to have survived."
Old Westbury Police Sgt. Richard Conlon said the driver of the Audi was coherent and conscious. "He was able to move his fingers and toes, obviously a good sign," said Conlon, who added that "as soon as possible we will get the road open again."
The police investigation continues.

Re: Huge accident on the LIE!
FI was right there when it happened (but in the eastbound lanes thank god)....his initial observation was that there was no way the Audi guy could have survived....glad to read he did.
