Re: Anybody feed baby just pumped breast milk?

My son is almost 4 months and I have been pumping bm all this time. He gets only 1 bottle of formula for his last feeding each night. I have to admit it's hard on me as it is very time consuming, but I know it's the best for my boy and plan on sticking with it until I go back to work (he should be 6 months at that point).

I'm not sure how you are working it, but the medela PIS is excellent, and I recommend pumping both breasts at once!

HTH!

I have been pumping as well, I was breastfeeding for the first 2 weeks, then had to switch to pumping as it was getting to exhausting for me to feed two babies. I give them breastmilk all day, and they get formula at night. I wasn't producing enough milk for both of them. Its seems to be working out fine this way for me!

I hope you don't mind Sunny, but I have a quick question too.

To the moms that exclusively pump: how many times a day do you pump, for how long and how many oz a bottle do you give your children? ThanksChat Icon

That was my next question. I am trying to build up my supply and am not sure how much is too much pumping.
I want to get to a point where I don't have to supplement with formula for a while.

Re: Anybody feed baby just pumped breast milk?

I give my babies 5-6 ounces at a time, I pump probably every 4 hours. I get about 10-12 ounces at a time. I don't know what others get, I would really like to know so I could see if I am producing a good amount!

I supplemented with formula quite a bit but when I pumped I got about 1 - 3oz in the beginning and when my supply was at it's best I could get about 6oz. I only did it for 6 weeks.

Yep, same here except I get about 6-7 ounces total per pumping.

ETA: I pump for 15 minutes total each time

Re: Anybody feed baby just pumped breast milk?

I only pumped the 1st month....but my routine generally went like this:

I would pump every 2 hrs... getting about 2-3 oz.. each time... Usually I would try to nurse first, and then pump right away...

Sometimes it was hard, because he was eating every 2hrs... so I would feed him, and then pump...keeping me in the same spot for at least an hour (he is a slow eater..)

I gave 2 bottle of formula @ night....

Make sure you have a good pump...for I did not and struggled with milk supply issues @ the end...also the LC I worked with...strongley recommended trying to nurse first...for no matter how wonderful your pump is...nothing sends that msg to make more milk better than a babies s-u-c-k

Re: Anybody feed baby just pumped breast milk?

Steph, is the baby not latching? Or are you in a lot of pain?

I do a combo of BF and pumping - I also recommend the PIS - its the best.

I am using the PIS. She was latching on, but not getting enough and getting too frustrated. Because of the jaundice I had to supplement with formula, so she kind of gave up.

The same thing happened to me, Hailey had what they called breast milk jaundice, so I had to give her only formula for 5 days to get it out of her system, so by then she really wouldn't latch on - so I decided to give her pumped breast milk. It worked out much better, I am not as exhausted and they are still getting the breast milk.

Don't give up!! Keep trying to get her to latch. You'll be amazed what babies can do.
What about a visit with a lactation consultant. I see one regularly but honestly after one visit nursing was such a different experience for me.
I pump and BF. I have low milk supply so telling you how much I get won't really help.

How long have you been pumping?? I'm so not an expert on this, but just keep on pumping (both breasts at the same time) on a regular schedule, and your supply should increase. At first I would hardly get 2-3 ounces, but it gets better with time.

Thanks! I haven't been pumping that long at all and don't pump on a regular basis yet b/c I was told at the hospital by the lactation consultants not to pump until at least 4 weeks. I am BFing my son all day, when do you think I should pump? Right after a feeding? Will I have any milk left? Any suggestions would be apprectiated. Chat Icon

They say that you have the most milk in the morning so when I pump (which isn't everyday) I do it about an hour and half after my morning feeding. I find the later in the day, the less milk pumps.

Also, I pumped after the feedings, just to make sure they were completely empty. Otherwise, they don't fill up completely. When I first started exclusivly pumping, I was doing it every 2-3 hours, then after about a week or two, I'll go every 4 hours. If I don't pump, I find it can get very uncomfortable!
