Friend question...

Would you ever break the trust of a friend?

If a friend was going through something really really bad...alone...and told only you and said not to tell anyone, but you felt that other people would be able and willing to help without a doubt...would you ever tell them?

I dont think I could ever break the trust of a friend....but besides life threatning situations..is there ever a time you should or could?

I think it really depends on the situation but if i felt that other people would be able to help the friend in need (especially since you are saying it is REALLY REALLY BAD) YES i would tell.

Re: Friend question...

I also think it depends on what it is....and will this friend ever speak to you again if you betray her confidence

only if I was 100% positive that betraying the trust would be 100% beneficial.

I agree, but you would still run the risk of losing the friendship because you really can't gauge the friend's reaction to your betrayal.

Re: Friend question...

This is such a difficult question, since I am so very loyal to my friends AND it would have to be a near life or death situation for me to ever betray a confidence..

BUT if I was entirely certain that telling others about this situation would , in the end, help the friend - (and it was something I KNEW I could not fully help with on my own UNLESS I involved others) well then I think I may go ahead and break the confidence

Even if the friend never forgave me .. while it would REALLY hurt me, I would be able to handle the consequence (especially if she wound up OK as a result of me doing this, then in a way it would have been worth it ... )

Re: Friend question...

it depends what the issue was...and, it depends on which of my friends it was...some, I know would get over it, but some I know would never forgive me...

Re: Friend question...

Well lets say the issue is not anywhere near life or death but something serious that is scary and upsetting, sort of a life changing moment.,.. and you know the friend wouldnt be that upset over telling...I still even knowing that guess I dont feel comfortable...Confidence means sooo much to me...

I just feel like Im not enough support , and wish I could tell other mutual friends so they could help too.

Thanks for the help even though cryptic...

Re: Friend question...

Outside of a life or death situation, I would never break the trust of a friend. If I felt a third person could help (perhaps even more than I), I would convince my friend to tell others or let me act on their behalf.

"I just feel like Im not enough support ,"

Say exactly this how can she argue that if it is in her best interest and if she does argue it then i would break the trust !

Re: Friend question...

Maybe you can say something like, "I really want to help you and don't want to break the trust you have in me, but maybe so-and-so can be of better help becasue...." and give the reason.
