I have to plan my in-laws 40th wedding anniversary party! I need HELP
It is hard to plan from a different state. I don't even know what kind of "event" that we want. I am guessing something simple. Most of the guests will be 60+ so we don't need a DJ or anything like that!
What type of food should we have? Should we try to remake their wedding cake? There are so many wonderful people with great ideas here and I need to borrow them!

we need some details
Where are you looking? At a restaurant, catering hall, VFW type place or someone's house? Nassau? Suffolk?
About how many people?
I think recreating their cake is an awsome idea. I would also get a couple of cocktail party type music cd's to play in the back round.

Okay...it will be in Torrington CT. Places there are slim pickings....I have contacted two restaurants and a banquet type hall. There will be about 30-50 people. Should I do a set menu? Brunch? Lunch? Favors? I was not this confused when I planned my wedding and my mother's 50th B-day!

We did in-laws 50th wedding anniversary last year. We had it at the Irish Coffee Pub - not sure how much it was for each person, but if you want to know - let me know and I will find the paperwork for it. We had the meals and then we had top shelf liquor.
We didn't do too much decorating - I think we got 2 or 3 50th wedding anniversary balloons.
I tried to get their cake re-done - but it got shot down by some of the in-laws. Oh well.
I made book marks for little favors for the guests to take home.

If you are having an older crowd, without dancing I would think a lunch or a brunch would be very nice. I think a tiered wedding cake would be very nice. I would do favors, but something like chocolates.

I've never been to an anniversary party with favors, but if you did favors, I'd do something edible. I agree that with an older crowd, brunch or lunch would be fine. Are you limited to Torrington? You'd probably have a better chance finding more options in the Hartford/West Hartford/Avon area.

another cool favor could be a CD of hits from the year they were married. CBS FM makes these-- or they used to- and I am sure you can find something or make one yourself with a little research.. Boomers are into their 60's music..
I would also think your best bet would be a party room at a hotel-- generally, they handle everything soup to nuts and can probably provide CPs as well. I think a brunch or luncheon would be nice-- but you could also do a cocktail party-- you should find out what kind of crowd your IL's friends are.
This web site should help you find some venues http://weddingsitesandservices.com/

Do they live in a condo community? They sometimes have party rooms to rent out and you can cater in something from a local deli. Even hot dishes and chafing dishes.
Who doesn't love a buffet?

If you don't want to play CD's, you can look into hiring a pianist for background music (if the place has a piano) - we did that for my grandmother's birthday party.
I think it would be really cute to blow up some pictures of their wedding day to have around the room.
You can't really go wrong with a buffet!
