Hello...I have a really important question
We are not TTC yet, but perhaps in the next few years. My sister has a disability--my mother did nothing you're not supposed to do, it was one of those "1 in 100,000 people" things. She is older than me and is quite an inspirational young woman....sorry to be longwinded but I am wondering if I would off the bat be considered as a high-risk pregnancy b/c it's in my family? I would be lying if I said this didn't scare me, the chance of it happening twice in the family. It's spinabifida. Thank you.

Re: Hello...I have a really important question
Is it something that is passed on via genetics? If not, I think your chances are the same as everyone elses.

Re: Hello...I have a really important question
Before ttc, you may want to see a genetic counselor. That person would combine you and your dh's family history and discuss the odds and chances of this being something that you may be at risk for.
If you are at a high risk for it, they may suggest pgd. Which is where you have genetic testing done on embryos during IVF.
They have come a long way with this. They now do prenatal surgery and can correct the condition very often.

I suggest the same as Michelle. I also suggest starting to take the highest prescription of folic acid as possible right now just incase. When I got my HSG, they found that I had spina bifida occulta (I never knew) and my RE prescribed me folic acid asap as a precautionary measure. It can't hurt, even if it isn't hereditary.

Re: Hello...I have a really important question
Thank you ladies so much. I know nothing about this, and I didn't want to ask my mom *just yet* because then she'd think we were trying and get either really excited or really nervous!
