Question for teachers!

I just heard yesterday that if you get your phd and get certified to teach hs you start at a significantly higher salary then with a masters?

anyone know if this is true and what the range is?

Re: Question for teachers!

It's true - however, you may price yourself out. Meaning, why would a district pay you X amount of more dollars with no experience when they can get someone cheaper (Master's or Bachelor's) who may already have experience - or if not, is at least signigicantly cheaper - kwim?

Re: Question for teachers!

i see. i'm only asking because someone i know got their phd is doing their post doc now but went back to school to get certified.

he said instead of starting at say 60,000 they start at 80,000. do you think it would be worth it for me to get certified? i'm doing my phd now but wanted to teach higher education, but i was thinking of getting certified as a backup.

What really stinks is that starting tenure track profs. where I work start at $43,000. Chat Icon I love the lifestyle of the college prof., but the pay is not good. If I had to do it again I would do secondary teaching with the intention of doing administration (principal).

Starting teaching salaries vary by district. $60 is high, but many of the Nassau districts are that high. Suffolk tends to be lower, starting at $40s-50s from what I have heard.

High school teaching jobs are hard to come by, but tenure track faculty jobs are even more difficult to get for less pay, so I don't know. Chat Icon
