Fatal confrontation between man and teen
After night of fighting between two teens, Miller Place dad of one shoots other boy in face, cops say

BY CHRISTINE ARMARIO
Newsday Staff Writer

August 11, 2006

A Miller Place father killed a 17-year-old boy whom his son had been feuding with, shooting him in the face from the edge of his driveway on a quiet residential street, Suffolk police said.

John White, 53, allegedly came out of his home late Wednesday evening armed with a handgun after his teenage son, Aaron White, was kicked out of a Sound Beach party where he had been arguing with the victim, Daniel Cicciaro of Port Jefferson Station, about a comment made in an Internet chat room.

Police described the comment as a vulgar remark made months before about a girl they knew, while Cicciaro's relatives said the comment was a threat to rape the girl. After the younger White left the party, he and Cicciaro continued fighting on their cell phones, police said, and Aaron White told Cicciaro where he lived.

When Cicciaro and four teenage friends arrived at the White's Independence Way home shortly after 11 p.m., John and Aaron White came out with guns in hand and began yelling, police said.

"I'm going to shoot you! I'm going to shoot you!" John White allegedly told Cicciaro, Det. Lt. Jack Fitzpatrick of the Homicide Squad said.

Police said John White then shot Cicciaro in the face. Cicciaro's friends pulled him into their car and rushed him to John T. Mather Memorial Hospital in Port Jefferson, where he died 80 minutes later.

"This animal took the law into his own hands," Daniel Cicciaro's father, who has the same name, said. Crying and falling into relatives' arms, he said, "He was the greatest kid in the world."

Neighbors who witnessed the aftermath of the shooting said both of the Whites sat on the steps of their house, crying and hugging each other as police arrived. John White was handcuffed and charged with second-degree murder. He was arraigned yesterday in First District Court, Central Islip, and ordered held without bail.

Andrew B. Siben, John White's attorney, said they believe the altercation may have been racially motivated. The victim was white and the suspect is black. He declined to elaborate, but said his client has no criminal record and is a foreman at a Brooklyn asphalt company.

Frank Leslie, a White family friend, said the family was devastated and offered condolences to Cicciaro's relatives. He described the Whites as "very much the all-American family."

"All of us are just trying to develop some understanding of how, why this occurred," Leslie said yesterday from the Whites' Miller Place home.

For Cicciaro's family, there was no consolation yesterday, as they grieved for the Newfield High School graduate.

The elder Cicciaro said his son aspired to take over his company, Dano's Auto Clinic, in Port Jefferson Station, where he worked since age 8 and had his own detail business.

"Daniel, my son, was my best friend in the world," the elder Cicciaro said. He said they had every meal together and worked side-by-side at the family's auto shop. He said his wife and Daniel's 16-year-old brother, Nick, are devastated.

"There's no words to describe him," said Michelle Manchester, 17, a friend of Daniel's. "He did anything he could to make people happy."

John Specht, Cicciaro's uncle, of Setauket, said, "The boy had nothing but his future in mind. ... It's just tragic."

Tom Snow, 53, who lives across the street from the Whites, said, "It's so sad. ... I never expected this in a million years in Miller Place."

DaniRN was one of the nurses at the hospital that they brought the boy to. She said it was horrible. She said the mom's cries were so painful.

Shoot someone to defend the honor of some girl and because your son was kicked out of a party???????????

If Mr. White valued and regarded his son so highy, why did he not value the life of someone elses' son??

So sad Chat Icon Why didn't he just call the police? and why did he and his teenage son have guns in their hands??

Very well said. So unbelievably senseless.
This is what happens when some people own guns.

Re: Just read this in Newsday

I do find it fishy that the boy and 4 friends went to the white's house in the first place. The argument should have ended at the party....it drives me nuts when people take things further.
Call me a wimp but I always would rather back down then to let things get to a next level.

But even at that, Mr. White should have called the police, and said listen these kids came to my house to harrass my son, and left it at that. He shouldn't have taken it into his own hands.

I think there was probably some fault on both sides, but certainly noone needed to die. It is just tragic and sad and I think someone on the news said last night that it broke apart both family's lives, and I do believe that. Definetly Melissa! I'm like you, I can't stand agression because, just like what happened here,I'm so scared that a confrontation would lead to something so tragic. I rather drop it and be alive.

I also agree that Mr. White was prompted by the boys in the car that came to HIS house, but he lost credibility with me as soon as handguns came into play.
