BTDT Moms...Would you take a 8 month old to Hawaii?

SIL asked us to come for a visit to Big Island of Hawaii with Gracie at the end of January 2007. Grace will be just about 8 months. Am I crazy to go on a 10 hour flight with a 8 month old? The flight is the ONLY con. The pros are
1- we go to Hawaii again
2- Dh & I can leave Gracie with my SIL while we go to Maui for two days, just the two of us.
3- Gracie will spend time with her Aunt

Does the con of the flight outweigh the pros? TIA

i have a 10 month old and he does not sit still at all! i think every child is differnt, but we just got home from a montauk trip and it was not relaxing AT ALL! He required a lot!! I could never imagine a 10 hr plane trip, 2 hrs in the car was enough!

It is a long flight - but we were just there for our honeymoon and there were lots of people there with their babies.

Maybe try and time the flight with her sleep schedule, hopefully she would sleep the whole wayChat Icon

A friend of mine took her two sons when they about that age and she said it was tough but worth it.

I would think it'd be easier to go with a baby rather than a toddler - so yes, go now while you still can!!! Once they start walking, it's all overChat Icon

Seriously though, my friend has flown alone with her baby to Ireland a few times and it was easier when she was a baby.

OK. We will book the trip. I was so concerned because I did not want to be one of "those people" with the screaming baby on the plane for 10 hours, having a plane full of people giving us dirty looks.

We went last January (for our babymoon) and LOVED it! I love the fact that SIL has a separate house on her property and we can stay there. Plus, DH and I want to go to maui on our own for two nights! Chat Icon

I will tell Dh to start looking for deals on flights. Chat Icon

OH! One more question...
Did you pay for the baby's seat on the plane and bring a car seat or did you hold the baby on your lap? What would you do?

I couln't imagine holding my son for 10 hours straight! I think for both of your sanity... I'd get the extra seat.

I'd opt for bulkhead or pay for the extra seat. I would fly on direct flights if possible & schedule at night. I'd rather bring a baby than a toddler.Chat Icon

Continental flys to Honolulu direct out of Newark.
