insurance question.

I am not sure if I am returning to work but I do get my 6 weeks leave. i am assuming I get to keep my coverage for the 6 weeks. Will my baby be covered in the hospitial. i want to add the baby to my coverage for the 6 weeks until i decide since I have the better coverage..so you think my job will allow me to add my baby? I am so confused.

i would be very careful with this and expect paperwork HELL.

as i understand it, one may change insurance when a qualifying event occurs (i.e. birth, death, loss of job, etc.). find out exactly from your insurance company what these events are and how much of a grace period you have to make the switch (30 days?).

as of now i am leaning towards having the baby under DH's insurance and possibly me as well, however i want to make sure that all hospital related expenses are covered under my current plan, so i am in a similar boat as you! i have to find out if i can place DD under DH once she is born, and then if i want to make the switch as well see if i can do it later within 30 days of giving birth...

Ok do I have to let my job know that my plan is to add the baby. i am so bad at all this stuff. i just want to make sure my baby is covered in the hospital.

You should ask your HR department since companies handle it differently.

When we added the baby to my insurance my company did it for me, I just had to call HR with her name, birthdate, etc. I did that while still at the hospital.

We also added her to DH's plan at the same time (mine was ending in a few weeks anyway) and his HR gave him a form and we had to fill it out ourselves and submit it.

If you do not do it within 30 days of a "life event" (marriage, divorce, death of spouse, birth or adoption of a child, etc.) you can not add them until your open enrollment period. I had this problem when I got married and my company dragged it's heels sending in the paperwork to the dental insurance company and DH wasn't covered for several months.

one more thing. my boss said in addition to my 6 weeeks i can get disability for 6 weeks. Are you covered while on disability? And do i qualify for cobra?

If your company keeps you as an employee for those 6 weeks, then yes, you will have insurance while on STD, but you are responsible for any deductions that usually come out of your paycheck.

Anyone whose insurance ends can pay COBRA to extend it, but it is usually VERY expensive as you have to pay your usual deduction as well as what your company pays for you. Keep in mind that this will most likely go up if you are paying for individual coverage when you switch to family coverage after adding the baby. If you can get on DH's insurance it will probably work out to be cheaper for you. Again, HR would be able to guide you through the 6 weeks of STD coverage and COBRA costs.

I would go directly to your insurance company. My office doesn't have an HR department- just an office manager. I called the insurance company when I first got pregnatn and I just called again to confirm that the procedure is still the same.

For me, the baby is covered for 30 days after birth under my insurance. Then I have to put her on her own policy.

i believe as long as one is on maternity leave and contributing to monthly insurance payments, one is covered. you need to double check this with your company.

i agree with shelly, even if your company has an hr department, cross-check everything with your insurance company directly, and if possible find out if you can get your hands on a copy of policies and procedures in writing.

on numerous occasions at various jobs i have had hr tell me one thing, and then the insurance company another. with this stuff i plan to be extremely proactive and up to date!

Be careful if you're seriously planning on not returning after your leave. I was told that if I wasn't going to return that the company wouldn't have to cover my health insurance. They could, in effect, terminate my employment since my last day worked really would be my LAST DAY WORKED for the company. I was told that I would have to return for at least one day in order to be covered.

Now, I don't know how true this is because the information didn't come from HR or my boss, but rather, from another employee (and I tend not to really believe everything I hear unless I get it "from the horse's mouth"). Try to ask questions without showing all your cards at once.
