Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
I have a connected living room and dining room and right now I have 2 matching oriental rugs, one in the LR and one in the DR.
DH wants to carpet (wall to wall) in the LR but then it would have to continue into the DR area... or would it???

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
My parents have a similar situation where the dining room and living room share a floor and a large doorway. They have carpeting in the living room, and then hardwood floors in the dining room.
I don't remember what it's called, but they have that small piece of wood (saddle?) running along the edge of the carpet to seperate the two floors.
I'm not a big fan of carpeting in the dining room - I much prefer an area rug.

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
my mom has the same layout and did carpet in the dining room and it actually looks ok - again they use the EIK most of the time so I don't know how practical carpet in the dining room is.
We have carpet in our DR and are getting ready to rip it out and put down wood.

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
You don't have to continue the carpet. My parents had an L-shape where they had wall to wall in both rooms. My in-laws have the same l-shape, but they have hardwood in the dining room and carpet in the living room. It looks really nice actually.

My parents have that set up...they have it all carpeted. I think you could just carpet one room though.

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
You can put in a reducer between the carpeted area and the hardwood floor.
Below is a picture... not exactly the same thing but the same concept. We decided to put a hardwood floor in the livingroom so it had to be built up a bit... your carpet will be a bit higher than the hardwood floor... and they put in a reducer so it would meet with the bluestone in the entry way.
I have the same from the two doors off my kitchen so the higher tile floor can meet the hardwood. Image Attachment(s):

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
I just got rid of wall-to-wall in the LR & DR. I hated it in the DR, esp with small children. I voted for no carpeting. I have a split where the LR & DR are connected too, I couldnt picture just ending it between the rooms.

IMO, if there is one room in your house that should have HW floors, it would be the dining room. it looks amazing!

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
We are in the process of doing the same thing...DH wanted carpet, but I also feel it is not as nice in the DR, so we are getting hardwood floors and then I will get 2 area rugs -- one for each room.

We also have a connected living room and dining room, both small areas. We did not carpet, we left hardwood floors with area rugs. I much prefer this look.

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
We have carpeting now in our DR and I hate it. I feel like I have to vaccum every time we eat. I personally like tile or wood underneath.

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
Hardwood floors and a really smart area rug looks so nice in a dining room. As palebride mentioned, you can just put a saddle between the two to make a distinct cutoff.

I'm not a big fan of having carpet in the dining room. I would go with hard wood floors or tiles.

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
We had white (i dont see how anyone can have white in a dr!) carpet in our dr when we first moved in and one of the first things we did was rip it out (we had wood floors underneath) and had them refinished.

Re: Carpet in Dining Room - Poll
My parents actually had it both ways.
When they first opened the wall & turned the bedroom into the dining room, the carpet didn't match, so they took it up & finshed the floors.
Then when they re-carperted the living room, they carried it through & I thought that would be weird but I really like how it looks. It makes the space look bigger & flow better.
It has been about 3 years & is holding up well. They spot treat if someone spills, but they don't eat in there every day.
