Re: Chemical Vs Ectopic Pregnancy
A chemical pregnancy is an early miscarriage. The egg was fertilized traveled to the uterus and started to implant...so you can get a positive hpt...or blood test. However, the embryo usually can't burrow and then the pregnancy ends.
An ectopic pregnancy is where the egg is fertilized but it attaches to some place other than the uterus. The most common place for an ectopic pregnancy is in the fallopian tubes. However, it can happen in various places. Many times with ectopic pregnancies, the body is confused....and Af can start, because the uterus sheds it's lining but then later you get a bfp on hpt.

Re: Chemical Vs Ectopic Pregnancy
Chemical pregnancies are less than 6 weeks.
As soon as you see the pregnancy(u/s) in the uterus, ectopic is ruled out.

Re: Chemical Vs Ectopic Pregnancy
I just lost what seemed to be a chemical pregnancy due to my blood levels. However, my blood is being monitored every week right now to make sure my progesterone levels go back down to zero to make sure that it was not an ectopic and that my body did indeed miscarry completely. The blood work is verification to make sure there was nothing in the tube.
Please feel free to FM with any questions
-eta: There never truly was a sighting of the egg in the uterus - although the uterus was totally prepared for pregnancy. However I did begin to m/c the day the u/s was being done which is why they are verifying with the blood work. I was 6 weeks at the time

This happened to me as well at 5 1/2 weeks. I tested positive at home 3 days after AF was due. Then started bleeding 3 days after. They did not see anything on the US but I had passed some tissue teh night before. My HCG did not go down as they thought it should so I got a shot of methotrexate(a chemotherapy drug that gets rid of abnormal cells-ex. tubal pregnancy) and the assumption that I may have had an eptopic PG although it was never proven by any other tests. So for me they were kind of intertiwined in a way.

Re: Chemical Vs Ectopic Pregnancy
With me, they thought I had a chemical pregnancy, but my levels were going up which indicated that it was ectopic. My levels were not increasing as much as they should of.
They did an ultra sound and because I have fibroids they could not find the pregnancy. I was told it was not in the fallopian but that it might be hiding under a fibroid. I had laparoscopy and they still could not find it. So they had to give me a shot of methotrexate and DNC.
If methotrexate is given, you have to wait....I believe 3 cycles to start TTCing again.
I hope you don't have to go through what I went through.
Sorry you are going through this!

Re: Chemical Vs Ectopic Pregnancy
I also had an ectopic pregnancy. It was a late implanter, so I had a negative blood test 11 days after my IVF transfer. Even got AF!
Went about my business and waited for my next AF to start another AF. She was late, so as a fluke I tested and it was positive. I basically have no falliopian tubes, so I knew it was impossible that it was natural.
Turned out the embryo floated out of a tiny hole in my uterus and implanted on the outside of my uterus, next to my bladder. I had to have shot of methotrexate to disolve it.
