How do you write to someone who is in prison?
This is a relative I haven't seen in a number of years. I mean, when I write to someone, I usually ask how they are doing, what they are up to, etc. I want to know how they are doing, so I've asked "how are you?" but what else can I write? I don't want to shove it in his face that he's in prison, you know? But I'm drawing a blank.

Someone I knew from HS went to prison. Although I never wrote him (parents wouldn't let me), he used to write me all the time.
I think more than anything they want to hear about whats going on with you, on the outside, some sort of connection to that life...

My DH had a friend in jail, and I used to ask if he got raped in the shower, but I don't think that was appreciated.

I've written to people in prison before, and like LisaW said, they mostly want to know about YOU, or people you mutually know. So write as much as you can about yourself, however, still remaining sensitive to the fact that they can't enjoy life the way we do.
