Can you justify spending money you dont have if it will make you feel better about yourself?

Many of you know how down I am feeling lately.. I really need to SAVE $$ and get out of debt so I have started cutting back on things..no more manicures/pedicures..no more gym membership..got rid of hbo and preview channels... well I am feeling bleh and I think a lot of it hasta do with feeling fat and unhappy with how i look--after the hoidays i ate a lot and I nver got back on track with the gym, so i canceled my membership to NYSC (then tried Lucille which I did not like)..and Im just feeling horrible--not to mention I have IBS which is aggrivated when you DONT workout..so Im sitting here today thinking of all the kind words everyone had to say to make me feel better--and I know its up to me to make a change and get motivated again..so even tho I dont have the extra 450 bucks.. I am going today after work to Sears (they r having a sale) to BUY myseld a treadmill..that way it is in my house and I wont have any excuse.. stomach issues, or gym being crowded and I can work out while I watch my shows in the comfort of my own home, and at any time--late or early depending on the day...

mind u i am trying to get out of debt YET I feel like its 450 bucks that in the long run will make me feel much better about myself? is that crazzy to spend (charge) this money on sucha thing?

I can see cutting back on extras to save $, but i think a gym membership or gym equiptment is an investment in yourself.

Working out will keep you healthier, being healthier, you'll save on prescriptions, copays etc...Which eventually frees up some $ for you.

i don't think it is a waste. Chat Icon

$450 is a lot but it will save you the cost of a membership in the long run.

Your health is really a huge asset- you have to protect it.

I did the same thing prolly 5 years ago. Spent almost $900, payed it off in a few months and used it religiously until last year when I moved and couldn't take it. I felt guilty but cause I used it so much I was so glad i did it.

I'm going to search but there is a book you can buy (like the Entertainment book) and it's for all gyms, classes, yoga, pilates, etc around the city. Most of the gyms give you free week memberships etc.

The book only costs about $60, let me try and find it for you.

I'm sorry you're feeling down. If you still want the treadmill, why don't you check craig list or free cycle? you may get one at a really great price

the big problem i have with getting it off craigslist or some place like that is. I have no way to get it to my house ( no vehicle) and to set it up if nots already put together..the 450 at sears included delivery AND set up :) I would luv to see that book tho...

thanks girls--as always super helpful Chat Icon

Michi, I personally think it is money well spent. I think you know it too.Chat Icon
I am TOTALLY the type of person that has a hard time getting my azz to the gym everyday after work. I initially felt guilty investing in an eliptical (especially with DH barking in my ear how we have a gym just a few blocks awayChat Icon )
I work out at home and I love it. I can work out any time I like. It was such a worthwhile investment.
Furthermore, in the long run you must remember to do what is right for you and it looks like working out at home is a comfortable fit for you as well.Chat Icon

I would get it.
i have a treadmill and it's way better than a gym membership for me.
i can do 20 minutes or an hour- i can look like crap and not worry about it (don't have to be presentable, etc) and it's cheaper than a gym membership.

I would also get a yoga mat and some 5, 10 and 15 pound dumbells.

Keep in mind a treadmill in an apartment building may generate a lot of noise for your downstairs neighbor.

You may not be able to work out very late.

i just bought a treadmill from sears 2 weeks ago, and i think it was worth it. I havent used it yet as much as i anticipated, but thats cuz of just being very busy (excuses excuses)
but i agree..you can do it whenever you want, am, pm, in your pjs if you want to!
I think its a good investment!

which one are you getting? I just got one of the weslos and it was about $300..
i had to put it together myself though- that took about 2 hours Chat Icon

have you looked at other gyms... i know nysc is a higher end gym

to balance money and life is no easy thing. you need to save but still invest in yourself.
prehaps there are other things you can cut that you don't think about.

If it makes you feel beter, think of it as $450 dolars spent now that could save you money in the long run on health care, or even just having to buy bigger clothes!

I have to agree with a majority of the posters here! I think you know too but just want a little extra justification. Yes, right now the $400 seems like a lot since it is a lump sum out of pocket but over all it will end up saving you so much. The treadmill will help you feel so much better, both physically and mentally. You will definitely get your $$ worth Chat Icon

Re: Can you justify spending money you dont have if it will make you feel better about yourself?

i think you should get it..if for some reason, you decide you dont want it a year down the road, then you can always sell it!

I didn't know they could put it together for me..but its probably better that way, cuz now that its together, i cant seem to get it out of the room i put it in!
I just got the least expensive electric treadmill they had..I was in a rush because I had a bad experience w/kmart, and had to cancel my order with them.
I heard pro form is very good!

Re: Can you justify spending money you dont have if it will make you feel better about yourself?

well, i just joined NYSC, even though its more $$ then my other gym. when i told fh, he was not happy. with the wedding coming up, we just don't have the extra cash. however, i explained to him that this (the gym) is what i spend my $$ on. i don't really buy lunch/breakfast at work, save for coffee/tea. i don't buy clothes and i'm not a big mani/pedi girl, so this is where my money goes. he understood that and is okay with everything now.

so i see what you are saying about spending what you don't have....

It's hard for me to justify spending money on me if I don't have it. I will forgo almost every luxury to buy something I really want - no matter how expensive it is but try not to go into debt for it.

I completely see buying the treadmill since it will save you money in the long run and more importantly, if it will help your IBS. Your health is the foremost issue - without you're not working.
