"Joint" email accounts ???

Gosh, does this annoy the crap out of anyone else ??????
My hubbys friend got married and that was it, his email is "screened" by his wife (and this the "nerdiest" sweetest guy EVER)... sometimes SHE writes back to his friends Chat Icon and recently I sent him photos (of my kids, he knows them their whole lives and is like an uncle to them) and "they" wrote back (how cute Chat Icon)

Ive known several people, who when asked for an email addy, give what is OBVIOUSLY their husbands email account, or one that they share, which is totally under HIS name...
some of these, its YEARS and she still never created her own account.

Is it me, or is this a bit much?? Why do some wives enjoy being half of a whole and not having even an email account to call their own? Accounts are free and you can open a new account every day, whats the point ??

thanks for letting me vent Chat Icon

I never thought much of it. Regular mail gets read by both, answering messages get retrieved by both. The only email accounts that DH and I have that are completely separate are our work email accounts.

ets: I did always find it weird when I received mail or holiday cards from a 1 year old. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

We share an email address, actually it was always mine.
I set one up for him years ago and he never checked it, he only goes on the computer maybe once a month for Netflix and his iPod.

I guess if anyone has anything private to say to him they have to do it the old fashioned way and pick up the phone and call him! Chat Icon

Most of the email is stuff that is meant for the both of us anyway, ie invites, pictures... etc.

Just curious - why don't you want his wife commenting on pics of your children? If he is like an "uncle, maybe she considers herself like an "aunt" I wouldn't care about that.

The only thing that BUGS THE CRAP out of me about people with one email address is if the email obviously has info for the other person and the one that reads it does not pass on the message! Chat Icon

Yup that was me. I find it really strange. Get your own identity. My friends & I use email as a regular form of communication. If I wanted to write something to a friend who's husband was going to read it, I just wouldn't. Before my husband was into computers, people would send me a message for him. That didn't bother me. Once he started wanting to check for messages, I made him get his own account. He doesn't need to be privy to my friend's bitching about their husbands or recounting dates.

For me personally, I need my own things and my own identity that goes for things in addition to my email account, I also am a firm believer that joint bank accounts are fine but everyone should also have their own account as well...you never know what can happen. As for this woman and the email, I don't know..maybe she just never thought to much about it. It's nice that she comments on your children and all but doesn't it bother him that she responds for him?

Re: "Joint" email accounts ???

Dh and I share an email. He doesn't really use it and very rarely checks it, but I use it all the time and usually have to tell him if there is something for him.

I don't think it is weird, I just set it up and we both use it. I am certainly not screening his emails and he isn't screening mine, it just kind of worked out that way, I guess he really has no interest in having his own. I don't see it as not having my own identity at all.

There's the difference though, if there's something for him you tell him and vice versa, I don't get when someone responds on behalf of the other person or worse, doesn't even pass the info along to them.

Re: "Joint" email accounts ???

My BF has one she shares with her husband and it drives me NUTS. I dont send emails to her, cause either he will read it and forget to tell her or its stuff maybe I just dont feel liek sharing with the "family". I guess I understand the conveinence of it, but I sure wish they had seperate accounts.

A friend of mine had one that had both their names on it and I was so scared of writing anything personal to her, afraid he'd read it. I guess if you have ALL of the same friends and you just send forwards and things like that I can see it, otherwise I would want my own acct.

Re: "Joint" email accounts ???

I go onto DH's email and answer his messages. But I do it as though it was from him. I have no idea why, but people want to be in my husband's circle. He never calls or writes anyone. I feel bad when his brother sends pics of the kids, and he doesn't respond back, so I do for him.

Its not sneaky, he knows I do it and is glad, he just hates writing. Or congrats messages about his new job....I just write thanks. He would never respond.

We address this the way we do with money. I have mine, He has his. We have ours. It may seem impersonal to some but it works for us.

Re: "Joint" email accounts ???

Im glad to see Im not alone in this Chat Icon

Its not that it bothers me that the wife answers, and she is a very nice person, so its not that she shouldnt respond, but when someone changes totally (he used to respond to all and every emails, now he hasnt responded in over a year!) and it was HIS email account that "they", she does have her own... Shes just overbearing, thats all...
The boys have "boys nite" very often, and send tons of emails back and forth, he NEVER responds, which is VERY unlike him, he's a HUGE computer person and VERY email-saavy. so things like this can be annoying...

I guess its understandable for the spouses that are just not computer people and just have a place for photos to be sent, but I still would create their own Chat Icon I created one for my parents once just so I dont start getting THEIR junk emails... Chat Icon but it was useful to sign them up for stuff...

The money thing doesnt bother me, as my hubby says, his money is my money Chat Icon Chat Icon

It was funny to hear other opinions on this, I hope I didnt offend anyone Chat Icon Chat Icon

I just wouldn't send emails sharing personal stuff. What if I wanted advice on something I would rather keep between my friend and I?

Re: "Joint" email accounts ???

I guess DH and I are in the minority as we only have one account at home (he set it up so it is his first initial and our last name). To be honest, I really could care less! It is only for stuff that we both need to access at home like car e-mails, bills, i-tunes, etc. We both have our work e-mails and blackberries that we access at home. If someone needs to send me or him something that is not intended for the other, they can send it to our work e-mails. I am at work 10 - 12 hours a day plus the 1 hour commute each way that I can check my blackberry. That is pretty much all I want to be checking e-mail anyway!
Phones still work too! Half my girlfriends will just call if they need to tell me something. Besides, DH and I have NO secrets from each other. If anything needed to be kept from each other, e-mail is really not the way to go!

Re: "Joint" email accounts ???

While we have joint financial accounts, we have separate e-mail accounts.

I only have one friend who has a joint e-mail account. She was married in 1994, before the days of home e-mail, so that is probably why her account is jointChat Icon

I agree with Barbara, DH's friend sends him crazy 4th grade boy humor and my friends vent about their husbands and kids. We aren't "keeping" anything from one another it's just that we aren't interested in what the other's freinds are sending them.

Re: "Joint" email accounts ???

I dont think it has anything to do with hiding anything from eachother, or how much you love eachother, etc etc.
Do we both pick up both phones when either of our friends call ? Nah, we could care less about the other's girls nite/poker nite conversations...

AS far as work email, I worked in computer departments of several companies and Im sure most of you know very well that MANY companies monitor internet and outside email quite closely, and its not about what you write or dont write, its more how much time its taking away from your job. So I tried to not use my work email as "chat" email as much as possible... (yes its hard Chat Icon)

ahh, well im sure its one of those things, whatever works for you.. its just SOOOO annoying that I cant get in touch with a friend because "oh maybe he deleted the email by mistake Chat Icon " no offense to anyone, but in some cases Ive encountered some of these girls love being half of one and having no backbone (its beyond the email account I guess...) I have a couple of friends like this -- for this reason when it's something for her ears only, I pick up the phone. I don't think it's a big deal and I don't think it's because she has no backbone or anything - just not into computers too much and has a more traditional method of communication.
