Had a HSG today......

and there is a Polyp on the uterine wall. Could that effect the ability to get pregnant? This HSG was so very different then the other one I had. This dr. made me move onto both sides and then half-way inbetween. The other dr. just had me lie on my back. Since the last HSG was "clear" new RE didn't push for another HSG until this week. I see the RE on Tuesday and already have the films and report!

Re: Had a HSG today......

A polyp is a fibroid...it can cause a lot of abnormal and heavy bleeding, because they irritate the lining of the uterus. If its small they wont do surgery to remove it cause that will create scar tissue which is worse and it wont affect fertility to leave it.

It can be a cause of infertility yes. A large one can interfere with the implantation of a PG . the body thinks the fibroid is a foreign body when the eggy trys to implant and then the egg cannot implant either ....

the can re-occur as well if removed.

And at my HSG I had to move side to side as well.

I think you need to discuss the size of the polyp with your RE and see what they say. They will know best if its big enough to be a cause of your infertility...

Re: Had a HSG today......

I thought a polyp and fibroid were 2 different things...
An endometrial polyp is a glandular overgrowth. A fibroid is a benign smooth muscle tumor of the uterus.

Polyps can cause infertility and can be removed.

That's what I remember, I could be wrong as usual! I hope this helps!

I think you're right. I have fibroids and none of my doctors have ever referred to them as such.

Re: Had a HSG today......

My HSG showed that I had a huge polyp on the uterine wall. My RE said that was probably why I couldn't get PG, because it was interfering with implantation. I had it removed by a hysteroscopy.

Who did the hysteroscopy? How long was recovery? How uncomfortable was it? Thanks!

This is correct. Fibroid surgery is much more invasive. Removing a endometrial polyp that is small can be extremely simple. Before doing IVF, I believe most RE's will want it removed.

A hysteroscopy can be done by your RE or even an ob/gyn. It involves anasthesia and is usually done in a hospital. No incisions are made, they go through the cervix...with a tiny camera, and I believe through laser or some other device simply detach and remove the polyp. Recovery from a hysteroscopy is very quick but you can't really ttc that cycle.

However, I was very fortunate, and didn't have to do all that. I had my polyp removed by my ob/gyn in his office, in the matter of 2 minutes...using low dose of demoral. My polyp was small 7mm. BigB, FM me, if you want to know more about this, or even ask your ob/gyn or RE if they can remove it in the office.

Endometrial polyps can act like IUDs...they can interupt implantation. If an embryo tries to attach itself to the polyp, it won't implant. Polyps and miscarriage also can be related. In fact I was told, "if you miscarry again, we will look more into that",... Well that's when I decided...no way, I need this removed.

BigB, I hope that perhaps the "polyp" is the reason you weren't conceiving and removing it brings you a BFP !!!!

Yes, Redstar answered your question. For me, my RE did the surgery - it was done in the hospital - I was in an out within a day. I probably could have gone to work the next day but I had a laparoscopy at the same time so that was worse and I was in bed a few days. It really was not that painful at all for me, although I did have some pain killers! FM me if you want further details.

Re: Had a HSG today......

I wanted to add again I know someone who suffered from scar tissue forming after removing her polyp..The new RE she sees said it never should have been removed and now she is having problems TTC.

Small Polyps will NOT interfere with your TTC efforts. They are basically in lay mans terms skin, like a skin tag or a wart growing inside the uterus.

Make sure as with everything you speak to you RE and have them tell you all the options.

This sounds like excellent advice. I never knew about the polyps making it difficult with TTC issues.

But I did want to send you hugs Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon and wish you much luck for a BFP very soon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Had a HSG today......

To add to what a few people said about about not removing small polyps - my polyp was huge. It had to come out - and in fact I got PG the very next cycle.

If my doctor had said that it was small enough not to cause harm, or that removing it was dangerous in any way, I would not have had it done.
