ok serious question about car seats for babies

Dh and i were going to the mall ok I saw a ladie had three car seats 2 in the back and one on the driver seat. Now my question is can you put a child car seat in the front in the passenger seat ? I think its unsafe because if you got into a accident the airbags can come out and wouldn't that suffercate a baby? I am just curious this is the first time I EVER saw that.Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: ok serious question about car seats for babies

You're really not supposed to put a carseat in the front seat. The only time you CAN is if there is no other safe option and if you have a switch to turn off the airbags.

If you even dare put the rear facing or any infant seat in the front you have to have the airbags turned off! In Cali it's the law.

Car seats are not allowed in the front seat at all. It is VERY unsafe!Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

eta. I take it back - it's not illegal, but IMO the parent should be cuffed. Why, oh why can't I make the laws??

Re: ok serious question about car seats for babies

What are you supposed to do if you have say 3 small children then? Someone told me that they still have their six year old in a car seat now. With the new weight limits it's quite possible to have three children needing car seats.

The airbags might suffercate them but maybe safer to be in a carseat then out...

Not allowed. I hope that they don't drive around like that perminantly. I know not everyone has all the money in the world but it might be time for them to buy a more appropriate car for their family.

Honestly, in this case, it's time for a bigger car. It's just not safe to put them in the front seat. If this were the case, I'd get a small booster seat that could fit in the middle of the backseat for the oldest child.

IMO I dont think a 6 year old needs to be in a car seat anymore. If you have 3 car seats buy a larger minivan/station wagon/ or suv with third row seating!

Re: ok serious question about car seats for babies

I dont think its a suffocation issue, I think it is the airbag hitting the back of the seat (rear facing) with such force it will hurt the babies neck. Until a year old a child doesnt have the neck strength to be ok in a crash.

I will have 3 small children in February and I will have 3 car seats in the back of my car. If the woman wasn't driving a car where that was possible I hope the oldest kid was in the front and the airbag was off. That is so dangerous!

I don't know, I don't have any kids, but a colleague of mine said his 6 year old is on the small side and within the weight limit of needing to be in a car seat. Hypothetically I could see someone not being well off enough to afford an SUV or minivan but having three kids...Not saying it is right, but that it could happen...

The starting weight for a booster seat is 30 lbs... if your colleagues child is less than 30lbs I think they have an issue.

Re: ok serious question about car seats for babies

Effective March 27, 2005: all back seat passengers who are age four or older but under age seven must be restrained in an appropriate child restraint system. A child older than four years of age and over four feet nine inches in height may be restrained by a safety belt.
Anyone caught violating this law is subject to a fine that can range from $25 to $100. According to Section 1229-c, the court will waive that fine if the individual provides proof that he or she has purchased a child restraint system after the violation occurred. This, however, can only be done once. The court will not waive fines for subsequent violations.

you should be able to fit 2 car seats & a booster seat in the back seat. If you had 3 infants, you could probably get 3 of them in the back seat. It would be tight but you could probably do it.

Re: ok serious question about car seats for babies

This weekend I fit a booster seat with a 3.5 year old in it, an infant car seat with a 5 month old in it, and a grown (but thin) adult in the backseat. No excuse for not putting all three in the back.
