Saw something pretty disturbing today...
I stopped at Dunkin Donuts this morning for a lite latte and on line in front of me was a middle aged woman with a girl who was about 4. It was pretty cold out and had started flurrying. Well, this kid had NO jacket on, a lite long sleeved top, pants that were about 2 sizes too small (her ankles were showing) and shoes without socks. She looked dirty and her pants were light colored with urine or #2 stains on the seat of her pants - very noticeable. I mean, of course I feel bad if they are poor but get the kid a jacket. But I don't think they were bc the mom ordered about $25 worth of stuff (donuts, bagels). The little girl asked a simple question, like "what is that?" something very innocent and the mom snapped at "oh just shut up!".
I really wanted to just confront the mother - I had to bite my tongue. I wanted to run to the store and get the girl new clothes and a jacket. I felt helpless.
What can be done in situations like this? I mean, should I have waited in the parking lot and wrote down their license #? Could I have made an anonymous phone call? It really broke my heart

Sad yes...but there is really nothig you can do imo. And since you don't know these people or their situations....I don't know if i would act on anything like that

I don't know what I would have done in your situation, but I know it would have made me sick to my stomach

Re: Saw something pretty disturbing today...
Even if you would have made a phone call... they would have been far gone and The authorities or whomever you called would need much more information then something you saw. Its probably not just you seeing this but teachers, neighbors, friends, family. Hopefully if it is a continuous problem then someone is calling the appropriate aithourities Thats really sad. When you think you think you've seen it all ...you see more.

Before I was a mother, I would have done nothing and just shook my head...Now that I am, and with all the horrible things I constantly hear about people abusing innocent children, I might have written down the license # and called authorities...but I wasn't in that position, so I don't know...
I agree, and It was a tough situation to be in. I feel so bad for that little girl.
