Stony Brook Hospital

Is anyone concerned with delivering at Stony Brook considering all the bad publicity they have had lately? I hear good things/ bad things. It just concerns me when the bad things come from people who work there... Chat Icon

Re: Stony Brook Hospital

I'm delivering there. I don't pay too much attention to the news, but the reports I read about -- death of 23 week old infant and the over-dose of the 1 year old don't concern me that much. So, unless there are new reports out there I don't know about, I'm not worried at all.

Everyone has different opinions on what hospitals are best and everyone has their preferences. I have friends that live out on the east end who come all the way to Stony Brook to deliver b/c they think it is the best and I have heard really good things from them. I also really like my midwives and they only deliver at Stony Brook, so I'm not considering changing.

Re: Stony Brook Hospital

I just delivered there last Tuesday and it was a fantastic experience. Every single person I encountered (and there were a lot) were fantastic. I would highly recommend that hospital regardless of what's going on. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.

I delivered there about a week and a half ago and had a great experience. All the nurses and doctors were very attentive and always asking how I was. They would come and check on me even when I knew they didn't have to. Every procedure was explained to me and they didn't administer anything to my daughter without me permission. I had a great experience and would go back again.

Re: Stony Brook Hospital

I delivered my son there...and he was in their NICU for 72 days...they were terrific. I have complete faith in their abilities, and will be delivering my 2nd baby there as well.

also...keep in mind that the news has failed to mention all the succesfull cases that the PICU and NICU at Stony Brook has had.

I was told by many people that if James was born in one of the other area hospitals, he would have been airlifted to Stony Brook because they are the only area hospital that had the equipment and Know how to take care of a baby as premature as he was.

Re: Stony Brook Hospital

Everyone is gonna have a different experience no matter where you are, a Dr or a hospital is gonna be seen differently to different people.

I had a bad experience there ...I was there on bedrest for over 12 weeks and delivered my pre term baby there.

After my daughter died during birth they brought me back to the post partum unit, telling me they had no more rooms available and I had to be there with new moms and their babies for the worst 24 hours of my life. I could go on for hours about the horrible care I recv'd...

I would say my negative experience was with the interns, training drs and some of the nurses.

I found the NICU and Nursery drs and nurses to be amazing.

I would trust in your Dr. They are the most important player there.

I know a few people who have since delivered ther and had wonderful experiences ...and i think that every hospital is the same with its good and bad reviews.

Re: Stony Brook Hospital

I think it all depends, each case is different. I also think that the staff makes all the difference. I would NEVER EVER go back there. I had a horrible experience when I had my 1st and it was because of negligent and rude nurses and doctors. I also found out after the fact that my daughter was in the NICU with an infection because they didn't give me the antibiotics that Group B Strep + patients are supposed to have and it was passed on to her Chat Icon. She had an IV, all kinds of tests, oxygen, a catheter, etc. all because THEY DIDN'T READ MY CHART. Plus one of the NICU nurses was extrememly rude, but thats a whole different story.

Re: Stony Brook Hospital

I had a great experience there, deliered my 1st daughter in 1999, my cousin his charge nurse of maternity on the pm shift, so I got amazing care. I think the pediatric units have gone down hill, I know a few nurses and docs who work there and who have wrked there and they teel mw the would NEVER bring their kids/grandkids there, they say go straight to Nothshore or LIJ, that is top notch. Can you request to deliver at an alternative hospital like St Charles, I have heard wonderful things about that hospital.Chat Icon

Re: Stony Brook Hospital

I was a patient in their peds unit when I was 11, I feel they were fantastic to me and I had a great experience there. And the peds unit is where they are having a lot of problems lately.

I also work at a medical malpractice law firm and we have NO cases against Stony Brook, I think it is the only hospital that we don't have any cases against in Nassau, Suffolk, and the city! I know that my firm doesn't have every med mal case in existence and I am sure there ARE cases against SB, but I have yet to see one.

But I also know how you feel, I live on Staten Island and I am in the process of switching doctors because I don't want to deliver at St. Vincent's for many reasons.

Re: Stony Brook Hospital

I work there as a doc (I'm one of the interns someone above complained about above, but not in Ob) and know of those involved and I'm still delivering there. Keep in mind that there are many sides to every story and a motivation behind each story told.

I would rather be there than somewhere else with less experience since I feel like I'm becoming a "high risk" pregnancy. Plus, I practially live there so I feel like it'll be a home delivery.

If it makes you feel any better, the hospital was recently reviewed by the hospital accrediting committee and we passed with flying colors. Chat Icon

Re: Stony Brook Hospital

I wrote this big thing up yesterday- and then my comp. froze...

Im not going to type up full details again- but my exp there was not a good one...

The nurses who cared for me and my baby (with the exception of one wonderful one) s ucked BIG time.... The LC was sooooooo useless... I just wasnt happy... and will considering switching Dr.'s just so I dont have to deliver there again...

However- ALL the Dr.'s were great- even the student resident ones- I never worried about anything... its just unfortunate- that the nurses had to ruin a potentially great exp for me...

Ohhh and having your own room- was a HUGE plus!
