Announcing pregnancy at work

When did you announce your pregnancy at work?

I am planning on taking whatever maternity leave they give me, and coming back to work full time. I work for a satellite office of a small law firm and we don't have an employee manual. When I started working here, I never thought to ask, and as we started TTC, I couldn't think of a good way to ask without raising suspicions.

My boss is great- in fact on Friday he made a comment, when you are a parent, but I don't think he thought it would be so soon. I know there is no part time option. There are no married female attorneys at my firm from what i hear- they left to be moms, because of the lack of part time options.

I am concerned about my job because i am the only attorney in the office on a daily basis. The partner comes down once a week, but if I am not here, I am concerned they may close the office, and then I'm out of a job. But there is nothing I can do about that. I am just trying to figure out when I can announce it.

TIA!!

I waited until I was 4 months. I would just make sure they know that your intent is to return full time after your 12 weeks FMLA.

unfortunately, I don't get FMLA. It only applies to business with more than 50 employees. We have about 35. My plan is definitely to return to work full time. My salary is too good to give up and my hours are 9-5- very rare for an attorney.

I plan on telling them at 13 weeks, so i have 2 more to go. I wanted to wait till after Oct. 15 b/c I work for an accounting firm and I didn't want them to be concerned about while they were doing personal tax returns. Plus it gives time to find someone else to do my job even if it is just temorary. I am still up in the air about staying home, if they offer me part time then i think I might take it or if they let me work from home.

I am also an attorney and your hours are great!! However, I work for a large firm and the FMLA applies--so at least I am entitled to 3 months. I told the office at 12 weeks. Apparently everyone tells me that they knew.

I would tell at three months and reassure them that you plan on coming back. I think that is the biggest concern with these firms.

Good luck!

Maybe they would let you work at home? It would save them $$ on an office or do you have clients?

I told them around 12 weeks. I wanted to wait until the 3 month mark to put my mind at ease that everything would be ok with the baby so if god-forbid "something" happened, I wouldn't have to explain it to them. I wanted to tell them sooner because I was so sick and didn't want them to think that I was just not coming to work because I didn't care. They were completely understanding and were great about it.
