Car rental insurance question
I have Geico. We are going to Disney in 2 weeks. Does my Geico policy cover the rental car? How do I find out? I know my policy has a rental car thingy but I thought that was only if I get into an accident and Geico will pay for a rental for me. Im so bad at reading my policy if you couldnt tell.

All personal use cars offer car rental cvg. The liabilty does extend to a car rental car as ling as the car in NYS is in a dormant state. Meaning not in use. They ask if you want to pay for extended cvg. But I didn't and I wouldn't.

Re: Car rental insurance question
I am pretty sure you are correct about Geico covering. My bro got a jeep rental on his honeymoon and they slashed the roof. There still is a deductible though and I believe it was close to the cost of fixing the roof for him. I think out of pocket he paid 250. I personally wouldnt get that extra insurance that they offer through car rental agencies but thats your decision.

yes all deductibles do apply. If a claim does occur it would be handled as your own car. I work w/ an Insurance Co. ANy questions FM me.

Also check out your credit card. Many credit cards (esp. like Amex) cover car rental.

Re: Car rental insurance question
Just as an FYI...I never used to get the insurance that the rental car company offered - I figured between my car insurance and the credit card coverage, I was fine. Then I spoke with a friend who worked in management at a rental car company and he told me to ALWAYS buy it because it was worth every penny if you get into an accident. He claims that the cars are not maintained the way they should be and that the hassle of dealing with your insurance and the rental company is not worth the $10 a day you would save. If you have their insurance, you can just walk away.

I am sure they are, but he did not work at the counter, and this conversation took place long after he left the company for a better job - he didn't especially like working there. So, I don't think he was trying to make them any more $$. And just to clarify - it was just the collision insurance he was talking about, not all the different ones they try to sell you.

Re: Car rental insurance question
I work for Avis and Budget. The agents are encouraged to sell the insurance and they do make "bonuses" if they sell a certain amount.
Having been the HR Manager for the Insurance Department, I've seen first hand what can happen when you DON'T take the insurance. While your policy and your credit card MAY cover any damage to YOUR rental car, the process is much more labor intensive and you shoulder a lot of the burden if a claim has to be made.
If you take the company's policy, and you get into an accident, there is very little you have to do, and, god forbid, if you hit someone else, the coverage is much better on repairs to the other person's car (we get most of the liability on it then).
So if you can afford it, take it. I always do, just in case.
Hope this helps.

Re: Car rental insurance question
Ok, so does this mean I get the insurance or dont get the insurance. Im used to headaches... is that all an accident using my own insurance would be (you know what I mean) or is it financially smarter to get their $90 for the week insurance?

Maybe Lauren could better answer this, but if you did have an accident, and it was your fault, you would probably at the very least have to pay your own deductible, which I am sure is more than $90.
I would rather just spend the $90 and not have to worry about any hassles, but that is me. I am not the gambling type.
