Let's say you bought a realllllly nice and expensive down comforter
that was about $399. Do you buy a duvet cover to protect it even though the thread count of the comforter is 700 or do you just use the comforter as it is?
I say buy the duvet to protect it b/c it is easier to wash and will keep it better protected. DH feels that you have the 700 thread count for a reason.
Your opinions please.

Re: Let's say you bought a realllllly nice and expensive down comforter
I probably wouldnt buy the duvet only because they annoy me.. They never fit right. I bought about 4 different ones, for our down comforter which was a lot of money, not $400 , probably $250 but thats a lot to me, and NONE of the devets fit right, they would hang off the end, the sides, get all crooked..so I said forget it. And we have had this down Comforter for about 3 years and its still in great condition.

Agreed. It's sort of like the old ladies who keep the plastic on the furniture

Yup!! The furniture stays in perfect condition yet they never got to "fully" enjoy it and by the time they pass its out of style and no one wants it and gets tossed out
Or people who have super expensive china and NEVER use it. Just look at it and dust it once a year

I use duvets for decorating, not for protection. Most down comforters are just white, so the duvets add color / interest / etc.
If you like just the white, then you don't need a duvet.

That's what DH said!!! But I just feel that we wash our comforter every month or 2. Sheets are obviously more often. But I don't know if washing a down comforter that often would ruin it. Hence, the duvet cover, same thread count. If the comforter were cheaper, I'd say leave it as is, but the one he wants is mad $$$$$!

We dry clean our comforters. They come out great and its easier on the comforter. It does cost a little more then washing it though, but if you are only doing it every 1-2 months I think its worth it!

Yes. Duvet are used all of the time in Europe and I've never seen one being used w/o the cover.
