Online college courses?
Has anybody ever taken them and/or know of any reputable sites? I went to culinary school and the hours required for a cooking job are just too much for my lifestyle right now. I want to get back in the game and try something new and with baby #2 coming so soon, I really can't get started at an actual school. TIA!

Many Suny have online courses...Go onto Suny.edu
I believe now they might offer complete online degrees.

Kris! This is what I am doing my dissertation on!
This website lists all of the online SUNY degrees. I did nearly my entire Master's online and LOVED it, and am teaching master's courses online now.
There are a lot of online schools out there are not accreditted (credits won't transfer to a SUNY). U Phoenix is the largest online university but is much more $$$$$ than a state school.
I would definitely start with a SUNY community college doing an Associate's. Empire State College is the largest online/correspondence SUNY unit and offers a bunch of bachelor's degrees online, but it is great to get an Associate's first.

I have loved 2 of the 3 online courses that I have taken - I think it depends on the professor, and I think courses that are more prone to "discussion" work best in this format.
The one class I didn't get as much from was data analysis/stats - but I think that had more to do with a lack of involvement from the professor in the online discussion boards.
Though they are convenient, I have also found that the online courses are more work than on campus courses.

I cant answer for Beth. But I graduated from a suny School. About 25% of the courses I took were online. Each course is a semester long.Usually homeworks are due by a specif day each week and time...A test is given at a apecific date and time...And papers must be due by a certain date ans time...So its as time sensitive as taking a course on campus

No, I usually went online at night since I worked full time, and did school fulltime (many on campus, some online)..Theres a syllabus with all the assignment due dates , test dates, and such...
If an assignment is due August 28th, then you would have to Aug 28 11:59pm to electronically send it. That was my experience with SLN courses

Most are the same semester schedule as in-person classes. Some are slightly shorter, but they are all strict with finishing the semester at the published time.
You can log on at any time. Usually you are told to participate with substantial contributions a minimum of say 3-5 times per week for a typical social science course. You respond to other students and questions from the prof. In grad classes usually we were assigned a week to lead the discussion and keep the ball rolling.
I think I only had one actual test in one online class (multiple choice); for the most part it involved more writing than the same class taught in-person.
In general I thought the social science and humanities courses were easy to take online if you are a verbal person. I took grad statistics online without having any prior statistics classes, and it was hard to teach myself the material. There is no one to help really in that type of online math class...No one to talk you through a problem. From the research that I have done people ahve the lowest grades in online math, science, and foreign language courses.

Suny has an online program. You can even begin with Nassau and transfer them if you want to get a bachelor's degree.
