Asking for stuff back question
Okay, so four or five months ago, we had dinner for my husband's best friends. The couple have been together for seven years and were not engaged (which was a big issue for the girlfriend who I am very close to). We were discussing old relationships, etc. and the topic of my first fiance came up. Girlfriend wanted to see the ring so I dragged it out of the jewelry box. It wasn't anything special or worth anything of value. In fact, I had thought of hocking it but changed my mind because I would get less than a hundred for it (it was a .25 solitaire stone with a diamond insert setting - hey we were 21 at the time and had NO MONEY ). Girlfriend was in love with it!! She was oooohing and ahhhing and really, really liked it. Impulsively I asked her if she wanted it. I figured if someone liked it and used it it would serve them better than to hang out in my jewelry box.
Fast forward to now. They are finally engaged and she doesn't ever wear the ring. My mom was surprised I would give the ring away and was like "Why didn't you save it for Amber??". I was thinking that Amber will have enough stuff from me, etc. and she would probably have never worn that ring either. My Mom thinks she'll be curious about it, but it's not like I would even bother to mention this person down the road. She thinks I should ask the friend for it back and that if she's a friend, she'll understand. I sort of have a let it go attitude.

Re: Asking for stuff back question
If it was me, I would just let it go. I think it would be different if it was a family piece but even since you said its not worth much, its not worth it.
Like you said, Amber will have lots of things from you that are worth more in $$ as well as sentimental value

Re: Asking for stuff back question
hmmm. You did give it to her...
Why not throw out some "feelers"?
Ask if she still has the ring. Follow that up with "oh, do you wear it?"
Maybe she'll get the hint and return it. But, I probably wouldn't ask straight out for it back.

Good idea...I wouldn't directly ask for it back...but see if you can get info out of her...if you never get it back, no big loss anyway, right?

My Mom gave both my sister and I rings from her former boyfriends/fiances. She didn't give us the whole down low of their relationships but we knew her history of who she dated prior to my dad, etc. It was actually kind of cool (and they are nice rings to boot ). I think Mom is more hung up on it than I am. She's a sentimental fool whereas I'm not so much.

Re: Asking for stuff back question
I would let it go, especially if I never had any plans to wear it or have it made into a pendant or something.
I generally don't give things away unless I plan on never seeing it again and the way I figure it is if I gave it to someone, it is now theirs to do with it what they want. JMO.
