DS won't eat and DH and I are trying to figure out why...
Ok as of lately DS was eating just fine. 6-7 ounces every 4 hours. Which came to 4 feedings a day. It was fine with me since he was getting 24-28 ounces a day which his doctor said was just fine.
Now lately he's been crying a lot during the feedings. He'll take 1-2 ounces sometimes 3 and then wants to burp and then won't eat the rest. He starts crying hysterically.
The way he was eating before was he would drink the 4 ounces, burp, then I would make 2 more ounces for him and he would take it and burp one more time in between and then in the end.
Now what's been happening is like he seems to want to burp more and is spitting up more milk than usual. I know spitting up is normal but he's doing it more than usual. Actually spitting up was not even an issue with him. He did it like once in a blue moon. Now it's all the time and it's a lot. And he seems to be getting the hiccups a lot. The good thing is that he is not crying when he spits up/vomits. The only time he cries is during the feedings. Now I want to try more frequent feedings with less amounts but that means that he will not be getting the needed amount of ounces that he should be getting. And I tried the more frequent feedings today and I couldn't even get passed 3 ounces. We tried switching milk but the same thing happens. This has been going on for 3 days now.
I don't know what it is...It sounds like gas but then on the other hand he's been drooling a lot and putting his fists in his hands. DH said maybe he's teething. He's also been sneezing a lot lately too, maybe he has a cold. I'm not sure. We may be bringing him to the doctors tonight because like I said this has been going for 3 days.

It could be teething or he could be sick. I know with coxsakie they dont like to eat - also read that with an ear infection they could react the same way. Is it possible he has a/r? That could cause the spitting up. I hope he's OK!

No he is not mucousy at all. I suspect it's AR. But he is not crying in pain or anything. The only time he cries is during the feedings.

sounds like it could be a combination of gas and a/r. Katie used to do the same thing to me when feeding her. Some bottles she'd take 2oz or less! It was all related to the a/r and gas. I hope the dr can tell you what it is so you can make him all better :)

Maybe he's having trouble getting the formula out. Maybe you should try a different nipple size...

He's been using size 3 nipple on the avent bottles. It's never been a prpblem and he's been using that size since he was 1 and a half months old.

Re: DS won't eat and DH and I are trying to figure out why...
Hmmm, with # 3 over here, I dont analyze anything anymore
Luciano's "burps" come out of the other end He almost never burps. We pause in between every ounce or two let him take a breather (or he;ll s uck it down so fast and spit up) But this way he doesnt spit up and he passes gas instead of farting. HEy as long as the gas gets out.
It sounds like he's fine if he's not in pain and not crying. Why would it be AR?
Is the size 3 too big for him? IS it going down too fast and overwhelming him? I know Luciano spits up a little if he drinks it down too fast.
Luciano has times here and there that he only feelsl having 2 ounces, and then may have another 2 ounces an hour later, sometimes he'll gulp down 4ounces in no time. I really dont analyze every single thing, and log down ounces and hours and what happened. I think youre going to stress yourself out too much. tHeyre human, sometimes theyre more hungry than others
so he's just eating less per feeding? maybe the teething, the gums sucking on the bottle sometimes hurts them and they eat less because of it. have you tried orajel on his gums ?

I haven't tried orajel because I am not sure if it is teething. He's been using the size 3 nipple since he was 1 and a half months old and it was never a problem before.
With the smaller sizes it seemed he was struggling more with it. It can't be the milk because we tried enfamil again and spit that up as well.
Maybe the way he's been before has caught up with him causing him to have this gas...I don't know...

If I had to guess, I'd say teeth. My daughter has been doing this lately. She wants nothing to do with the formula. She'll take the cereal / food but fusses with the formula. I think either the nipple is bothering her teeth. Because she is even spitting the binky out. HTH

UPDATE:Re: DS won't eat and DH and I are trying to figure out why...
Mine takes his binky.
We took him to the doctor's yesterday. His regular Doctor was not there so he saw another one. He suggested we give him smaller amounts and see how he does these next few days and if that doesn't work then to add rice cereal to see if that would hold the milk down.
If that fails then he said to bring him back by the end of next week and we may have to do tests to see if he has acid reflux. To see if it's mild or severe and then from there we would have to discuss what would have to be done. He's definitely not having th 24 ounces in the 24 hour period. We're lucky if we get 20. We have to monitor to see if has several days where it's lower than 20. His weight is 12 lbs. 5 ounces which is good. But this problem with the eating started now.
And now he also has a cold. This morning he had a fever at 101. He was crying all morning from 4-10 am. It was not 6 hours straight of crying. He would eat a little then want to chill out and refused to go back to sleep. Finally at 10:30 am I made him go down, whether he screamed his head off or not. He had to go down to sleep at one point he's been up for 6 hours with maybe a half hour nap. So he went down from 10:30 to 2:40...almost 3 and a half hours, I couldn't believe. He is a light sleeper so the slightest noise wakes him up but he must have been so tired that not even the noises bothered him. He's open his eyes briefly and then go back to asleep...unassisted by me. Boy he was really tired!
Now poor thing has a cold and you can tell cuz his nose is a little runny and his voice is hoarse but through it all he still will show a little bit of our Matthew who is always smiling and babbling.
His fever is down but his nose is still runny...We are still struggling with his feedings though...
