Re: I have jury duty
My mother is currently in Brooklyn for jury duty, going in for days. They are trying to pick jurors for a big mafia trial. As soon as she got there, they told her that they know people's tricks and they sometimes purposely don't dismiss the ones that act crazy.
Mine is in mineola which is just 5 minutes away. I'll just bring a book, I guess.

Re: I have jury duty
I noticed you don't need to act "crazy", just opinionated. You just need to make it clear that you could not be fair and impartial when hearing the case.
Also, last year I was summoned (Mineola) and in the morning they announced they wanted volunteers to give blood. I volunteered, and all the volunteers had lunch, went upstairs to donate and were SENT HOME. So you can do a good deed plus get out early!

Re: I have jury duty
I had jury duty back in January, I enjoyed it. It was a nice vacation from work.

Re: I have jury duty
I just finished. I was picked for a case. Not as easy to get bounced as it once was. I thought the whole thing was VERY annoying

Re: I have jury duty
I served on a case last year, it wasnt too bad because it was over in 4 days. But there was alot of waiting so bring a book/magazine. They have comptuers in waiting room for jurors so you can go on the net. (In Mineola)
If you act like you will be biased the will dismiss you. DH did that when he was called recently and they let him leave.

Re: I have jury duty
I actually don't mind doing jury duty, but I get paid by my job when I have it. It was a lot of sitting around, but I just read a lot and went out for walks when we had breaks. I had to go to Brooklyn too, that was the biggest headache, but I was completely reimbursed for my train and subway fare.
I might be the only one on this thread who thinks this way, but I wouldn't try to get off unless it was going to cause financial hardship or I had a child care issue. I think that in order for the system to work, they need a good representation of people to serve. If I were on trial, I would like to know that other people like me were in the jury pool.
OK, stepping off soapbox now

I agree. I feel the same way. I am happy to serve. It's my duty to.
People who complain about the system and then try to "get out of it" really annoy me.
It's like, take a SECOND out of your busy life to participate in the process, OK?

Re: I have jury duty
I just finished 2 weeks ago. they dont care how racist, or crazy you are, if they need jurors they will pick you. I went to Mineola, they said they are over their heads with cases they are NOT dismissing unless for these categorys-- you are a full time day student. You have children under 16 and work less than 15 hours a week AND you take care of an elderly/sick adult or have a doctors note.
now here is the thing, when you are called to go into the room, 6 of you are called to be in the hot seat. they interview you the lawyers but they word things in such a way you have to listen to them- NOw if they dont choose you b/c you dont agree with the case then you go back into the lobby and wait to be called for another case, you just dont go home. One lady I met said she was there for 2 days waiting to be recalled b/c they didnt choose her for a case. I never saw her again after that day so I dont know what happened.
Def bring a book and or magazines. you do sit around.
I thought I would hate it and I actually did not mind it at all. Met interesting people, got to watch CNN and catch up on my reading and best of all got to see what its really like in a courtroom.

I agree with you. I just gave honest answers & really didn't think I'd be picked. I was 32 weeks pregnant, worked in a law firm for a few years and in general not very sympathetic to plaintiffs. They picked me anyway - and I spent my first day in the hospital trying to call the courthouse to explain that I had the baby early & couldn't show up on Monday. The judge called me at home to apologize & said he was going to have to have a word with the lawyers about picking someone who was far along in their pregnancy.
