Re: Mastic Beach
The SD is bad, and the Shirley Tangiers is the only area that is somewhat nice IMO. I wouldn't consider buying there, but thats JMO

Re: Mastic Beach
Friends of ours lived there for about a year. They had a house that looked almost exactly like the one you posted, only reversed (garage was on the right).
They loved their house, but I have to say, the neighborhood was really sketchy. Their neighbors just did things that made you wonder.
Like coming over to offer them pot on their first weekend there with a newborn.
They moved to Sayville on the one year anniversary of moving into Mastic.

Re: Mastic Beach
I have to agree about the area being not the best at all. We had friends of the family who inherited a house out there when I was a teenager and they were a young couple starting out so they went for it since the uncle gave them the house --- and I used to babysit their kids for them and even though it was a great house that the uncle had maintained it wasn't a good area. Not the kind of area that I'd want to raise kids. They ended up moving to Bohemia.
It is unfortunate that houses are just so damn expensive for some of us now...and that the affordable areas aren't very desirable.

Re: Mastic Beach
I teach for the school district... it is easy to say its a bad district when you have no idea what you are talking about.
The neighborhood is certainly not on your top 5 most desirable places to live, because it does have its good and bad parts. But your children will receive a top notch education in William Floyd. FM me with any questions.

Funny you mention the drug thing. Friends of ours who are now in Florida showed us two homes in Mastic that they were considering. As we walked outside, we saw the neighbors on their porch lighting up a doobie, with kids with them. I can't speak on the schools, I have heard negatives, but as far as the area, its not too nice. Def. not the safest either. I always say to myself, there is a reason certain parts of LI are cheaper & lower taxes than others. It usually means there more to the story.

Re: Mastic Beach
Unfortunately I have only heard bad things about the area. When my friends was looking into buying a house in that area, they were told the area was up and coming, needless to say after a drive around the area, they changed their mind on moving there.
Personally I would rather wait to move into an area when it is already up...not buy a house and wait/hope for it to get up there.
It is such a pretty house though, too bad. Good luck in your home search.

Re: Mastic Beach
Mastic Beach is a mixed bag, much like many other "lower income" areas. However contrary to what people think about the school district the only real problem with the schools are the administration stealing money. I have very close friend that raised three kids from K-12 in william floyd. One became a software designer, the other is an executive for a private jet service & the third is a school principle on Long Island. They all graduated in the last ten years. My other good friend lived off neighborhood road on a cute street with no trouble & loved the school. They decided to buy new contruction in Medford about three years ago & she says she wishes she would have kept her kids in William Floyd, she doesn't like Pat-Med. even though lots of people say its better.
I think people here need to remember that not everyone on LI can afford the "good neighborhoods", and some people here might live in the town someone is asking about. Isn't the american dream to own a home? Not everyone can achieve the same level. Although they are only opinions & she did ask I still think people should try to be a bit less harsh.
As for my opinion, I would never buy a home in any town, regardless of reputation without driving around on Saturday night, at bus stop time in the morning & at various other times. I would also look at the nearset shopping areas to see how they are maintained & so on. Additionally, if I had children ready enroll in school I'd go to the district & get their stats right from them. Ask about services & programs & visit the public library. I'm a hands on researcher.
