My gyno told me...

that when I am TTC (which I am, as of now - haha), that I just need to take a multi-vitamin, and that i don't have to take pre-natals or any folic acid. She said that the multi-vitamins have enough of what i need. She is a great doc at NYU here in the city, but I've always heard that I should take folic acid and prenatals.....do you girls think multi-vitamins are enough?

It depends on the person. Some multivitamins may have just what you need. I read the back of my prenatals - looks like a heavy duty multivitamin to me. It has all the folic acid I need. I dont think there is a universal answer on this one. Your doctor knows you best.

Re: My gyno told me...

If you are over 30 I would def take the extra folic acid 400 mg. with a multi vitamin if you are taking prenatals then NO do not take anything but that.

edited to say

Please be careful multivitamins are NOT enough to help protect from birth defects! that is what the folic acid is for!

Re: My gyno told me...

My doctor told me the same thing, she said once I get a BFP to call and she will give me a prescription for a prenatal. So I am taking centrum chewables, and I also drink a lot of fortified OJ

Same here, just multivitamins until I conceive. Mine has 400mcg of folic acid which I was told is good enough while TTC.

My ob/gyn is also a high risk dr - originally he told me my one a day womens was okay since it has 400 mcg (the minimum recommended dosage for those during their childbearing years) He gave me prenatals at this past visit b.c the meds I am on can reduce some of my vitimins and told me to start them 1 month before I want to TTC

My understanding it that some dr's prefer prenatals while you are TTCing others say the 400 mcg is enough and then when you get a BFP they immediately put you on prenatals.

If you are concerned I would call you doctor and discuss it with them further. It certainly can't hurt to take extra Folic acid it is water soluable so your body simply washes out what it doesn't need

I wish I could read what's in my prentals - mine are prescription.

Does any one know how I can find out what's in my prescription ones?

Re: My gyno told me...

I took a multi, not a pre-natal. My doctor was very adament about my taking Folic Acid, though.

Re: My gyno told me...

My gyno put me on prenatal( she said that they are good for me to start as early as possible and that she even continued to take them after giving birth even though she is not TTC because they are very good for your health) but she did tell me that a multivitamin is fine as long as it has the 400 folic acid required.

Re: My gyno told me...

My daily vitamin is a multi (Super B-Complex with Vitamin C and Folic Acid). It has 400 mg of folic. As others have pointed out, I've heard both types of advice: a multi or pre-natals.
