Re: Thousands in Nassau told not to drink or shower in the water
yikes...
(06/27/06) WEST HEMPSTEAD - Thousands of residents in Nassau County have been told not to drink the water Tuesday morning.
The gas additive chemical MTBE was found in the water system of the West Hempstead-Hempstead Gardens Water District. Water officials say the wells that contain MTBE were taken off line and the system is being flushed. The West Hempstead-Hempstead Gardens Water District is currently using a well from Garden City.
Only residents who use water from the West Hempstead-Hempstead Gardens Water District are affected. Residents in West Hempstead, Franklin Square, Garden City South and Cathedral Gardens may be affected. Those told not to drink the water are urged to use bottled water for cooking, brushing their teeth and making ice. For more information residents are asked to call (516) 483-1180.
Water officials will be testing the water all day and hope to have the chemical removed by Tuesday night.

It didn't say that GC was affected but I would drink bottled water to be on the safe side.

No - It's not Garden City...it's Garden City South. Big difference.
If our Landlords didn't watch News 12 this morning we would have drinked it and brushed our teeth in it too. I had already taken my shower, so I couldn't turn back time.
I came into work and told two co-workers who live in WH and they had no clue. One guy had to call home to his Son to warn him.

Nice...real nice. My family and my parents all live in the affected area. There was NO notice of this whatsoever! You would think with ALL the tax dollars, at least there could be a few cars driving around the areas with a megaphone for God's sake!

That's my area too...the Hempstead Gardens Drive area. I just went out to buy bottled water at Stop N Shop and it's going quickly.
I'm so glad that I brushed my teeth this morning!!

Re: Thousands in Nassau told not to drink or shower in the water
The article in Newsday is "freakier"!
Water advisory issued in West Hempstead BY WIL CRUZ Newsday Staff Writer
June 27, 2006, 10:39 AM EDT
A health advisory has been issued in West Hempstead, warning area residents not to drink or use water for cooking, brushing teeth or making ice, officials said.
The West Hempstead-Hempstead Gardens Water District said high levels of Methyl Tert-Butyl Ether, or MTBE, were detected yesterday at two locations on Hempstead Avenue.
State standards for MTBE, a fuel additive that can cause long-term health problems if exposed to drinking water for extended periods of time, is 10 micrograms per liter. The levels detected yesterday were 14 micrograms per liter.
Officials stressed that the MTBE at those levels does not constitute an immediate threat.
Still, the district, which serves West Hempstead and portions of Franklin Square, Garden City South and Cathedral Gardens, urged residents in those areas not use drinking water. Instead, they suggested using bottled water.
Also, the district recommended using kitchen or bathroom exhaust fans when using water -- say, for quick showers or baths -- since the chemical tends to evaporate in the air.
Officials from the district could not be reached this morning.
The Nassau County Health Department said it is investigating and cooperating with the district. Copyright 2006 Newsday Inc.

I was wondering that also, I work in Garden City Plaza, across from the mall, should we be avoiding the water too?
