a cup of baking soda in with dark (or any) colors, keeps the color looking fresh (stops fading).
i dont do laundry.. but that works

As you can see I haven't done much Laundry in my life 
Usually when we go to the laundry mat DH does it while I chase Anthony around the place!

Don't put the clothes in first- turn the machine on to begin filling it and add the soap. Then the soap gets distributed more evenly instead of landing on whatever item you dump it on! Once there's a little water in there, then add the clothes.
Also, too much soap causes the dirt to be redistributed instead of rinsed away. Less is more!
