another work/disablity/insurance question

I was hoping to find a new job while home on maternity leave. My current job offers no $$ while on leave so I'm only entitled to the 6 or 8 weeks of disability leave $$. (I can have up to the 12 weeks off)

Will I owe my current employer time after maternity leave because I took disability?

Also I hold the insurance for me and my DH - my DH's company has the same insurance company but the out of pocket is a lot more. When should i switch over to his insurance? Right before baby, during my leave or after I find a new job and tell the old job I'm quitting?

Will I be expected to pay my weekly insurance costs while on leave?

I hope this all makes sense!!! Thanks!!!

I am sorry to hear about your company...
I too will be looking for a new job but I can not to anything razy because i am the only one w/ benefits.. see if you can talk to your hr people..
My mom is hr and she says a lot of companies do not pay the leave because people do not go back after its up...
I would look into everything before you make any decisions..

I know at my job...if you have the ins through them... and $20 is usually taken outta your check for ins. and then you go on disability...You are resposible to get that 20/week to them before you go out...

Im not sure all jobs are the same...

Switching to Dh ins... Well.... you prob have to do that during open enrollment, and thats usally around Nov/Dec.... You can however be added along with baby for a life changing event...and having a child is one of them...but you have to give birth 1st! (I think you have 30 days before and after to be added)

At my old job you wouldn't have had to pay back the disability since that's an insurance policy they pay, not out of their pocket.

As far as owing time, no, that's part of FMLA and they can't force you to "pay them back" that time since you are LEGALLY entitled to it.

Insurance, since you are still an employee for the FMLA period you will need to make your usual contributions. Afterward you can pay COBRA to continue your coverage, but it will probably be higher than your husband's contribution. Your HR rep can tell you how much COBRA would be, but they would have a good idea then that you aren't planning on returning. If you know anyone who recently left they should have been advised what the cost of COBRA was, maybe you can ask them.

Good luck in your job search!

Hey there,
I am in HR. The state pays your disability and if your company pays you while you are out on leave, your payroll dept will usually deduct the amount equal to what the state is paying you. So it all evens out. But since your company does not pay you while on leave, it really has no impact on your company if your receive state disability payments.

If you leave your current job, then your DH can add you onto his plan - it is considered a "qualifying event" - spouse loses coverage. While you are on leave, you are expected to continue to pay your insurance premiums.

Hope that helps Chat Icon
