Eating fish during pregnancy

Last night DH and I went to our friends house for dinner. They served us Salmon. It was well cooked and I only at small portion. They have no idea that I am pregnant. I am almost 5 weeks and I don't plan to eat fish during my pregnancy. Will this harm my baby?

Fish is ok, however, you really have to limit your portions. Everything is in moderation.

Re: Eating fish during pregnancy

fish is fine to eat when you are pregnant, just not sushi or fish that is high in mercury like swordfish and tuna. Fish is high in protein and low in fat/calories, great food to eat when you are pregnant.

Re: Eating fish during pregnancy

Salmon is FINE. I'm a vegetarian but I eat fish so that's the source of most of my protein this pregnancy. I had a long talk with my Dr. about it, and was told that you can eat as much salmon as you like - it's actually QUITE QUITE good for the baby because of the tri-omega. It's tremendously good for brain development. Fish, just like meat, is fine just as long as it's well cooked, so no sushi, and avoid those fishies that are high in mercury, like Tuna and Swordfish.

Re: Eating fish during pregnancy

Safe: dangerous
wild pacific salmon
farm-raised trout
farm-raised catfish
fish sticks
summer flounder
croaker
mid-Atlantic blue crab
haddock
(safe to consume during pregnancy)

Restricted Consumption:
canned tuna
mahi mahi
eastern oyster
blue crab from the Gulf of Mexico
lake whitefish
blue mussels
cod
pollock
(limit to approx. one serving/week)

Dangerous:
shark
swordfish
sea bass
tilefish
tuna steaks
(do not consume while pregnant!)

Trying to get enough uncontaminated fish in your diet is understandably difficult; using a mercury calculator will help you figure how much mercury you’re ingesting with your fish. You can also get other sources of the nutrients found in fish. You may want to make up for Omega-3s by eating crushed flaxseed with your breakfast or snacking on walnuts. While flaxseed and walnuts have about a fifth of the Omega-3s, it may be the safer option until pressure is put on industries that contaminate our waters. Pregnancy diets deficient in Omega-3s will result in children with behavioral problems and abnormal vision.

Re: Eating fish during pregnancy

Farm-Raised Fish : PCBs
As if you didn’t already have enough on your plate. Fish farming raises a number of health and environmental concerns. Farm-raised fish have significantly higher levels of PCBs, or polychlorinated biphenyls, for a number of reasons. Because PCBs embed themselves in fat, ‘fatter’ farm-raised fish are rich in this cancer-causing toxin. And while you may think the nutrients of fish even out the dangerous effects of PCBs, farm-raised fish are considerably less nutritious than their wild counterparts. This is because farm-raised fish don’t have the opportunity to fulfill their natural and healthy diets. Therefore, stay away from farm-raised fish at the supermarket; farm-salmon is typically labeled "Atlantic" or "Icelandic", while wild salmon is named "Alaskan" or simply "Wild". Be sure to ask your fishmonger what waters your fish comes from.
