Sue, I am so sorry!!! That office sounds like a mad house!!!
I don't think it's bad that you did, he obviously respects you if he is willing to give you a reference!
I hope the new boss gives you the promotion you deserve!!

 Sue, I'm so sorry!! That's just awful!!
That's like me... I trained the new guy while he was hired into a position higher than me.  Then when my promotion came up, it was denied. I had to fight tooth and nail and then I finally got it. Can you fight for it? Can you argue your experience (you've been there longer AND trained her!!)? I fought for mine but having the union backing me up certainly helped. What about speaking to your boss's boss?

I'm sorry. My DH is going through something similar and he is in sales. His boss told him he won't be promoted "just because" he's been there 5 years longer but they hired a new guys and within three months he was promoted over my DH. We have to wait for now because we are in the process of buying a house, after that he's "exploring other options".

I personally would just get my feelers out and see what other opportunities are out there. You should never be brought to tears at work
