Christening gift

What's an appropriate amount to give? It's DH's godson. Is there a gift that is traditionally given? We were going to get a cross for his room and a check. But how much? TIA! Chat Icon

Re: Christening gift

savings bond or $ is the usual gift I think. if your DH is the godfather, I would say $100?

I agree..... or maybe you can combine money with a sentimental gift (engraved pic frame, cross) since DH is the godfather??

Re: Christening gift

Do you have to buy his cross (necklace) or Christening outfit? That's what DH and I did for our godson. We were both the Godparents and we bought the outfit and the cross. My other nephew, we bought the cross because he was being baptised in his dad's christening outfit (which was mine too). Honestly, I can't remember if we gave money, too. I think I might have also given a $200 savings bond.

Re: Christening gift

traditionally, in my family at least, Godfather buys the baby's cross.

My godfather bought me a baby cross AND an adult cross, so I'd have something special to wear when I got older, too.

The cross I actually bought for both Godsons was an adult cross.

ETA: Having the adult cross is the best thing to do, IMO. Even if you don't buy a baby cross also. Honestly, I didn't think of buying both. I have no idea why. I think I wanted them to be christened in the cross they'd wear as an adult. I'm a sentimental sap, I know. Chat Icon

Re: Christening gift

I heard that the tradition is for the godmother to buy the gown and the godfather to buy the cross.

Also if you go to shops where they sell christening gowns they have a lot of specialty items.

You can get a special Christening Bib with the baby's name and date of christening embroidered -- keepsake boxes, frames, booties with the baptism date on the bottom, etc. I can recommend the place that we went to in Massapequa.

As far as savings bonds they are a nice gift but keep in mind that the rules on them have changed and they now take 30 years to accrue as opposed to the 18 that they used to be --- so it is something to keep in mind when buying bonds -- the baby won't be able to cash them in in time for college!
