Feeling so Depressed... UPDATED

I feel like crap, I even feel guilty posting this. I have been feeling so depressed, I am assuming it is the quitting smoking that is doing this to me, but I am supposed to be happy right now with being pregnant. I am almost 9 weeks and feel so sad and withdrawn from everything. I wanted to call in sick to work today, but couldn't, spent the whole morning crying my eyes out.

I was going to call the dr. to see what anti-depressants are safe while preg. but I don't want to if I don't need to, plus they take 3 - 4 weeks to kick in.

any advice for me girls?

thanks
~ Karen

Re: Feeling so Depressed...

everyone has their moments of feeling down. trust me!!! its totally normal- your hormones are all over the place right now. just try and take some time for you. and try and think about the future and what lies ahead- your new baby that will be here in 7 months or so. thats exciting stuff. try and be proud of yourself for quitting smoking. that is not an easy thing to do i'm sure. but you did it. there are going to be times when you're not going to feel like yourself, but hang in there. when those moments hit you- post here! thats what everyone on here is for!! to try and lift your spirits!!! i obviously have no answers but can just say hang in there!!!! if it continues then call your doctor. if you think it may be something just passing, then try and look as much as you can at the positive. isn't always the easiest thing to do but you have so much to look forward to!!! cheer up!!! Aw, I'm sorry you are feeling this way. Your body is going through a lot of changes, plus you quit smoking (that's great!), you are anticipating how your life will change and your hormones are all out of whack. It's normal to have mood swings and be depressed and cry for seemingly no reason. I hope you feel better soon! Chat Icon Chat Icon

It's probably a combo of the hormones and not getting a nicotine fix. The hormones made me crazy and they still do! Hang in there! You can always come here for some hugs!

PS- I'm proud of you for quitting smoking! Congrats!

I'm sorry you are feeling this way. Being depressed is a side effect of stopping smoking because smoking releases a chemical in the brain that elevates depression. This is why a lot of people think that smoking helps them relax and feel better. This, on top of all the crazy hormones running through your body - it's no surprise that you aren't feeling great.

I hope you feel better soon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Feeling so Depressed...

I'm sorry Chat Icon
I def think its a GREAT idea to call your dr and speak with him/her about it.
I hope you feel better soon. Remember, your hormones are going NUTS right now - and throwing everything off. Plus quitting smoking can be very hard for some people (I had a very hard time too), withdrawal is tough...I had nightmares, headaches, sick to my stomach...

Its a combination of all this stuff that is making you feel this way I'm sure. But your I'm sure your dr can help you Chat Icon

Re: Feeling so Depressed...

I am with you- I quit smoking two weeks before I found out I was pregnant- It wasn't very hard and I was ready to do it but it definately does make it difficult when you add the hormones of pregnacy to the mix. I have had very strong mood swings these past two weeks, mostly due to all the changes. It will pass- I think this is the worst time of pregnancy- all the things that change but actually no real sign that anything is different. Feel free to FM me anytime.Chat Icon

Re: Feeling so Depressed...

I actually went into a bad depression in my 8th month due to some things that were going on with my caregiver and the pregnancy. It is actually NOT uncommon for women to have depression issues during pregnancy..hormones are really unbalanced and all weird.
Call your OB. Talk to him or her. You need to share these issues and come up with a proper plan to handle this.
It is unfair to you to suffer like this.

I agree you should talk to your MD. BUt I think you should try some other things also if you can to boost your seratonin. I would suggest going out for fresh air, being in bright places-sunlight if you can and exercise. Then for fun treat yourself to somehting you really enjoy.

Re: Feeling so Depressed... UPDATED

Ok, so I made an app't - when I posted this with the reg. dr. not obgyn, just to have the app't set, sometimes you can't get in for a week. I haven't felt like I did the other day at all, I really think it is all the hormones. So I CANCELLED the dr. app't to discuss the zoloft and the pregnancy. I do not want to start meds, if I don't have to, even if I was already on them then get pg - to me that is a different story.

the dr. said that sometimes it is WORTH taking the meds if you are an emotional wreck, I just don't know if I qualify as a "wreck" Is crying 1 or 2x a week a wreck? I know this post is silly I just do not want to hurt the fetus by being upset and stressed - BUT I don't know anyone who isn't stressed!

please help...

Re: Feeling so Depressed... UPDATED

Personally, I think you should KEEP your doctors appointment. Its just a consult - you need to talk to him/her and see what options you have and what your doctor has to say about things.

You have a long pregnancy in front of you, your hormones are going to be all over the place, its best to know your options now.Chat Icon

i agree...

personally, for me, a person who is a "wreck" can not function day to day in society. i am not an advocate of pill popping in general and would only do so as a last resort.

there have been many times in my life when i have been depressed. the worst was after a break-up where for a couple months i would have panic attacks. i dealt with them without any medication. i had the loving support of family and friends who helped me talk through my emotions.
