Re: teachers...

Too much testing and focus on test scores

Too many parents thinking that they know better than the educators

Children getting away with too much

Social expectations (media) - I have seen more and more kids friendless because they cannot afford Abercrombie clothes and Coach bags

I agree with these....also, not enough parental support. I know it tough with most house holds having two working parents, but even giving kids a half hour of time a day with school related stuff would make a difference.

Re: teachers...

I would say the worst thing is parental support. I feel many parents are working against us when they should be working WITH us. We are not the ENEMY. I don't think a lot of parents get that.

Re: teachers...

Along with the lack of parental support- I would also say not enough focus on Education- in my district- there is too much on Sports.

Too much indifference.

Not enough validation given to teachers- I can't really explain what I mean by this other than to give an example. We had a set of twins that we (as the teachers) felt that they were being abused. All the teachers went to pupil personnel to say what we felt. The school psych met with them and thought something wasn't right either but the principal said everything is fine and to drop it Chat Icon Well just got word over the summer that we were right and the principal was wrongChat Icon

In my district changing of directions too fast with lack of trainining.

Dumbing down curriculum to raise test scores.

Too many directives coming from Albany without giving the proper funding thus causing huge tax increases which are being voted down so other programs are being cut because of Albany's mandates.

I could keep going but it might turn into more of a rant than you are looking for!

Re: teachers...

What I listed are more opet peeves than hardcore educational problems

I see more and more that people rely on technology so much that when that technology fails, they are lost. Basic problem solving has gone out the window.

For example:

Spell check features. You would be surprised how many "educated" people cannot spell because of this technology.

and

Making change and knowing coin equivalence is a second grade skill that many cashiers cannot master. When a drawer runs out of quarters, people dont know what to do. The function on cash registers that tells a cashier how much change to give is also quite lame. It only takes a few seconds to count to the nearest quarter and dollar.

I would agree with you that this probably isn't the best thing to write about on a job application. You don't know who will be reading it and it is such a controversial issue.

Re: teachers...

when I was teaching, I thought the biggest problem was lack of respect for teachers. Many kid think they can do or say whatever they please without any reprucussions. There is no fear like there used to be.

Re: teachers...

I agree with all of the above.

Kids have absolutely no work ethic these days.

Their parents BELIEVE everything they say.

I have to be honest, after 13 years of teaching I no longer look forward to going backChat Icon .
DH and I have already spoken about me possibly taking early retirement and doing something else.

Re: teachers...

Totally agree with what others have posted!!!

There has just been a very large societal change that says the child is always right and the teacher must be wrong. It is infuriating at times!!

Kids not taking school seriously... They don't care because the value of school isn't reinforced at home as much any more!
