Water to replace middle of the night feeding?

has anyone done this? If so, how much do you give? Did it work? I am EBF and I think my DD is waking up out of habit 3 1/2 - 4 hrs at her first stretch, she should be going longer than that... I heard replacing a feeding with water works, just wondering if anyone has any opinions on this...

I didn;t do it, but it was suggested by an np at my peds office to eliminate the night feeding at 6 months.

I never tried this nor was it ever suggested to me. My daughter dropped her nightime feeding on her own at about 6 months.

I would not use water to replace the feeding..Molly did not stop her nighttime feeding that young. All babies are different. If it is habit then you may want to try a pacifer at that time or trying to get the baby back to sleep with a backrub. I never did CIO so I can't say to use that.

Maybe I will try to rock her or use a paci although she doesn't love the paci. I am not ready for CIO either. She has gone 6 or 7 hours before so know she can do it but lately she gets up around midnight and then again sometime between 3:30 and 4:30.

I dont understand this method.. if the baby is hungry and needs its bottle in the middle of the night how would water satisfy him?

I wouldn't give water - I would just eliminate the feeding if he doesn't need the bottle.

it is NEVER recommended to replace a feeding with water....they will either phase it out themselves (as mine has on her own slowly...we were down to one wee AM feeding 4:30-6:30am and the last 2 nights she's slept through it)

or wait till after 6 months old to phase it out with your training

Re: Water to replace middle of the night feeding?

My ped did recommend this and we tried it once and it did not work. It made dd so upset. What did help was giving her watered down formula---2oz formula with 2oz water and by 3 months no middle of the night feeding.
