Lets talk about sleep....

OK Ryan is 6 weeks old today... At night he usually goes to bed at like 11 wakes around 3 or 4 and then wakes again between 7 or 8... Its really not so bad, however this week he's been pushing going to bed more like 1...and even then its a fight to get him to go to sleep...yet he is still waking at those same times... Also- he gets up just to eat an ounce at his 3 or 4 feeding...whats that all about??

He really dosent nap during the day... maybe a half hour here and there...and usually like a 2 hr one between like 4-6 (if we are out travelling during the day...he is asleep all day but we are rarely out)

I try to keep him wide awake from 7 on...the other night he started getting sleepy at 9..so i tried starting our night earlier, but that didnt workChat Icon

Basically- what was your babys sleep patterns at 6 weeks? Also is this staying up til 1 thing the beg. of having his days n nights confused???

I would love for him to go to bed @ 9 get up @ 12 for a feeding and then sleep for a 4-5 hour stretch ( or through the night would be nice tooChat Icon )

He does get swaddled everynight, and does sleep with a binky...I know he dosent like his bassinett so we pretty much let him choose where he wants to sleep at night ( either the carseat or the bassinett) Im not ready to let him move into his crib in another room...

Please give me some suggestions!

I wish I could help but your son sounds exactly like mine. He is 9 weeks old and has pretty much the same schedule. About 3 weeks ago he did that 1 am thing too (how funny) I thought maybe he was becoming an insomniac. He was sitting in his swing till 1:30 am with his eyes wide open! Luckily it was only one night. His last bottle (i guess before 12) is around 10-10:30 then again like 2-3, then 5, or 6. Every night I hope that he will skip that 3 bottle but he never does and he only eats about 1 to 2 ounces. I try to keep him up before 10 but he will only get crankier. He cannot stay up for more than an hour at a time. I am sorry I can't help but I can offer support because you are not the only one.Chat Icon

Hayley will be 8 weeks on Sunday...she does the same thing. She eats anywhere between 10pm-11:30pm then about 3 or 4 hour later she will eat again. I wish she would sleep thru the night too.

ETA: She had been sleeping in her room since she was about 3 weeks. She HATED the cradle I had. There was a week there that she was sleeping in her swing and I was on the couch.

Marissa - I noticed Talia's sleeping pattern got more consistant right around six weeks. Now she goes to sleep every night between 10-11 and wakes up at 6-7.

Re: Lets talk about sleep....

Same here, around 5/6 weeks Alex became more consistent at night, though her day schedule is still all over the place.

She usually takes a nap from 4-5pm, then she's up from 5pm-9pm (that's her FUSSY period... fun time, let me tell you! Chat Icon ) She goes down at 9pm and usually wakes up at either 2am or 3am. I get her back down within an hour and she sleeps until 5am. Then she wakes up again at 7am, and she's usually awake until 9am and then naps again until 10:30ish. But after 10:30am, there's absolutely no consistency to her schedule.

I read somewhere (I think in the Secrets of the Baby Whisperer) that babies keep waking up during the twilight hours not because they're hungry, but because they get used to the oral stimulation. That might be why your little one only eats an ounce and falls back asleep. The author suggests that you start using hte pacifier. First night take her out and use the pacifier and the second night, put the pacifier in her mouth while she's still laying down. Within a week, hopefully, she'll just stop waking up at that time.
