Hey Teachers - Question about Parents Addressing You
I have a really annoying parent who always calls me by my first name. It's really annoying and I think, rude. Everything at my school is really official with parents - no one calls each other by first names - even though parents have asked me to call them by their first names. Whenever I have to call this woman or leave a message, I always say "This is Mrs. W__. And then she'll call me back and call me by my first name She's also "dropped" in with no appt
Any of you have this problem?

Re: Hey Teachers - Question about Parents Addressing You
Im not a teacher but Im glad you posted that. My daughter is starting preschool in September and I dont know what I am supposed to/allowed to call her teacher. I know her first and last name and technically since we are both adults, although I like to think of myself not as one, I don't know if I should call her Mrs. P... or Claire.

OMG yes, it is SO annoying and innapropriate. I am always uncomfortable w/ this situation. I do the same as you, just keep calling them Mrs. ____. I don't have the nerve to tell them not to do that, I wish I did! DOn't have the drop ins though, my school wont allow it, thank goodness!

See, I think sometimes preschool is a little different. When I worked at one, the kids and parents called us by first name.

that is innapropriate! i honestly wouldnt know what to do in this situation......esp without ticking off the parent....chances are she's trying to get on your good side! i would talk with another teacher or you principal if he/she is approachable about the matter...im sure someone else has had this exp b4

I pretty much ignore it, but it really annoys me. I'm not her buddy - lol. Pre-school may be different - you'll have to see when you go. If the teacher introduces herself to you with only her first name, there's your cue.

Re: Hey Teachers - Question about Parents Addressing You
ummm... YES! There are always a couple each year. Last year as the Dean I just wouldn't let them know my first name but one found out and started to use it. It was a male too so it really ****** me off since you know it was used to diminish me. I finally told him I was uncomfortable and preferred to be called Mrs. M$)#. He got the hint.
Oh and drop ins- I finally got smart and told anyone without an appointment that in order to give everyone the time and attention they deserve, appointments were a must. I just refused to see anyone who didn't have one, unless they actually had a real emergency- death, crisis with another student that needed my immediate attention.

Re: Hey Teachers - Question about Parents Addressing You
I hate when parents call me by my first name. I understand that I am younger than them but I would never address them by their first names!
