restaurant.com

Has anyone ever used restaurant.com? I'm thinking about getting a friend a gift certificate from there for her birthday in a few weeks.

Basically, you spend $30 and give $75 worth of dining certificates at various restaurants that the recipient can chose from, but there are limits on when you can use them (ie., often not weekends or holidays) and a set amount that the bill has to be in order for the certificate to be accepted. So it wouldn't cover a whole dinner, but could cover at least half or more of the total bill.

My friend likes to try new restaurants and dine out with her boyfriend, so it seems like a good idea. I am just worried that the restrictions might become a total pain in the A**.

Any thoughts? TIA!

Re: restaurant.com

I think my mom shares a membership with some friends-- she was telling me about something that sounds a lot like this-- personally, I do not think it's a good idea for a gift-- I think you cannot use the gift certs on weekend, like, only Mon through Thurs, and it may even be at certain times, like before 8 PM. If you are giving someone a gift cert, they should just be able to go and enjoy something- and not worry about the rules.

I've purchased these before. You can usually find codes for them for 40-60% off. The ones I have used were $25 off minimum of $35, good on weeknights, doesn't include drinks....
I just don't think they have a great selection of restaurants(not out east anyway).

Re: restaurant.com

I'm not a big fan of that stuff in general.
My friend gave me a GC to go to Ocean Beach for dinner - ferry/dinner/no drinks - and its a PIA cuz we have to go Mon. thru Thurs. before 8 p.m. - that's a real drag. We have been trying to schedule it before Labor Day and I don't know that we are going to be able to.Chat Icon
