Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
I work in a school, so Im around a lot now. But after we got married in April it was tough. We are going to have to get used to it again in September, working opposite schedules.

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
FH is a cop. Although the oppsosite schedule stinks for spending time together....it works out great for us though when it comes to our son. My mother is able to watch the baby for about 20 hours a week...and since Ken works nights and I work days we were able to avoid putting James in daycare.
I just hope that he is able to keep the same type of schedule when he becomes sgt next month.

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
things are pretty good.. DH works 4X12's and I basically have the same hours. the only thing that kills me is the overtime. We love the $$$, but DH gets addicted to it and tires himself out.

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
Its hard thinking about what he actually does for a living. As far as the hours, they could be worse... he works midnights so I am sleeping when he is working but on the weekend it takes all of my willpower to let him sleep while I am home.

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
MY DH was an NYPD officer, now he switched to PAPD (Port Authority). I can understand how most of you feel with the hours. They are crazy! Now the my DH switched police jobs, his hours are much better. I just wish he had steady weekends off! I'm sure all of you wish the same!

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
DH is Nassau PD and works 7pm - 7am. If he does not get off at 7am on the dot we most likely miss each other since I leave for work around 7:30am. On the other end if I leave a little later than 5pm we miss each other again since he leaves around 6pm for work. Sad but true there have been times where we've been on our cells driving in opposite directions on the LIE and we pass each other and wave. As some of the other ladies said, the $$ and benefits are great and I keep hearing it will be really good when we have kids.
Getting ordered in gets my panties in a bunch too, I haven't gotten used to that yet

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
It gets my panties in a bunch also haha
I have to say it could be alot worse, FI is on the job and he works the day shift and has steady Fri-Sats off. Just wish he was in a better area, it's not safe where he works

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
It's a very very difficult thing to get used to. Just when you do get used to it, there's some detail or OT or a transfer comes down that throws you off schedule.
My husband is FINALLY in a unit that works perfect for us. He works 4-1, 4-1 (sleeps over), 8-4, 8-4, off, off and then starts over again. It works out perfect w/taking care of my daughter.
The only good thing about this schedule is I know exactly what he is working for the year. When he was in narcotics, I never knew. We'd find out the night before or he'd get stuck w/an arrest, etc.
To be honest with you, I also like it because I have my time to watch what I want, lounge around if I want w/o feeling guilty. It has it's benefits but certainly has it's downfalls as well!
Fortunately, he's out in 5 years!!

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
my dh is a captain now. So there is no O.T. in cash :(
Its aggravating at times b/c as a captain you do not always have steady tours but I have gotten more used to it but it is still a job I hate at times.

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
My DH is NYPD also in the 73 pct and I find it really hard especially because of where he is and having to worry about him ALL the time. His hours are OK- 10:30 until 7:05 PM but, I HATE the weekends alone and going to events ALONE all the time.....(he has about an hour commute each way) so he does 12 hour days. 5 days on 2 days off 5 days on 3 days off... but, we somehow make it work..

Re: Any other wives of NYPD?
Mine isn't NYPD, but he's Federal Law Enforcement based out of NY. I hate it! His hours change day to day depending on each case he's on. Sometimes I enjoy having the apartment to myself at night, but I hate going to bed alone. I hate to be a nag, but I worry to death if he's late and doesn't call. I'm hoping he goes back to the Marshal Service. His hours were much better than, and I felt he was a bit safer.
