Sunday night LI Traffic

DH and I drove home to Queens from my parents house in Commack last night and the traffic was AWFUL. We left at 10:15 and didn't get home until almost midnight? Is it always this bad in the summer or do you think it was because it was fathers day? I thought the "Hamptons" traffic would be earlier - around 8-9, and leaving around 10:30 would be safe!

Re: Sunday night LI Traffic

the nicer the day- the later then traffic

if you leave the hamptons at 8pm you would be at the commack area around 10pm- so you go cught up with the people who left around 8 - 8:30pm which is normal for fathers day and such a nice day

I think that's typical for LI in the summer. A lot of people try to wait out the traffic -- especially on a gorgeous day like yesterday.

Re: Sunday night LI Traffic

depends..if the weather is beautiful, people head back much later. If its raining, they head back earlier in the day....

It IS crazy, I don't see how people can come out in the horrendous traffic on Fridays and head back in the horrendous traffic on Sundays! I never understood it...

Whats worse tho, is the peiople who think they know the back roads, and then just drive like a turtle.Chat Icon

Re: Sunday night LI Traffic

we'll have to keep this nice weather=later traffic in mind. Grrrr. It put DH in such a bad mood and then we were just fighting the whole time which certainly didn't help the situation!

Re: Sunday night LI Traffic

this happened to us last night too.
We left my dad's in commack and had to drive to NJ (by Giant Stadium)- it was AWFUL.
I really HATE LI traffic- it's never good- but last night was the WORST i've ever seen- it was really bad.

never again- i'm avoiding LI for the rest of the summer.

Since it was a holiday that may have made it heavier than usual.

Leaving LI on Sunday nights is a crapshoot. A few weeks ago DH and I were at my brother's in Lindenhurst and I was dreading the drive home- we left about 7 and had no problems- took an hour and a half, which is standard. But I used to waitress on Sunday nights and what a mess it was, just going from Mineola to Queens!

We had the same problem last night. We left Oceanside at 8:30 and didnt get back to Forest Hills (normally a 25 minute drive) until 10. It's just one of the joys of Long Island in the summer!

Yeah, I had the same problem. We lLeft Bethapge at 9:10 & got to Westchester at 11:20. It normally takes 50- 60 minutes.

We always to go to my parent's house for Father's day & I don't remember it being this bad, but I guess it was a combination of that & it being a nice day.

DH and I left my father's house in Pt. Jeff yesterday at 6:00 pm and didn't get home to NJ until after 9:00! We live in Northern Jersey, about 15 minutes from the Lincoln Tunnel. The most it should have taken was 1 1/2 hours. Chat Icon Chat Icon Chat Icon

Re: Sunday night LI Traffic

Fathers Day traffic has always been some of the worst. Sundays in the summer are always bad, but we used to drive from Baiting Hollow to Forest Hills, and I dreaded Father's Day traffic. It always seemed horrible!

Plus, like everyone else said, it was a really nice day so people left later. Sorry it took you so long!
